Gwen was born on May 13, 1945, in Jefferson County, Texas to William P. Shelton and Jewell Marie Knippers and passed away on Saturday, June 29, 2024, at The Guest House in Shreveport, LA.
Gwen was a resident of Waskom, Texas for 36 years where she and Dan purchased their only home. She was an avid nature lover and quite an accomplished angler. Her love for fishing led her to become the first woman to join the Bass Life Association on May 6, 1994, with a trophy bass, 8.5lb, 27inches, caught on Caddo Lake. She and Dan spent countless hours fishing on Caddo and Cross Lakes and made many friends on the water.
Gwen loved music and in her younger days, could be caught dancing on the porch with her grandsons to Willie Nelson. She always made sure they had new school clothes and supplies and made shopping for them fun. And no one gave back scratches like MawMaw.
When there was a major power outage in Waskom, Gwen and Dan stayed with his daughter and was entertained by their two great granddaughters, Codie Lynn and Ella for a week. They played Barbies and sang karaoke to Coco Melon and watched Disney movies. She later talked about how special that time was with the girls and was glad she had that opportunity.
Gwen was especially proud of her Native American Heritage and displayed her treasures in her home décor as well as her fashion choices. In her final days, her stepdaughter brought her a dream catcher made by The Oklahoma Apache Women. She shared that her great, great grandfather was from the Apache Tribe.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her oldest son, Jeffrey Hall; her two brothers, Hank Shelton and Jimmy Shelton; and her three dearly loved fur babies Cody, Abigail, and Kami. Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Daniel James Catanese; her daughter, Jennifer Hall-Rivard; her son, Tim Hall; her stepdaughter, Patricia Oakes and husband, Gene; her stepson, Jamie Catanese; her sister, Pam Nunley, her brother, Lonnie Shelton; her three grandchildren, Colby Greenslate, Daylon Adams, and Megan Long and husband, Chris; and her two great granddaughters, Codie Lynn and Ella Long.
Honoring Gwen as pallbearers will be Tim Hall, Jamie Catanese, Chris Long, Bobbie Lynn Foster, Gene Oakes and Daylon Adams. Honorary Pallbearer is Lonnie Shelton, Brandy Roberts and Troy Roberts.
The family wishes to express a debt of gratitude to her niece, Bobby Lynn Foster, for her devoted attention and selfless compassion given to Gwen and Dan during this difficult time. A special thanks to the staff at The Guest House and Amedysis Hospice.
A special message to Heaven: No more pain, no more suffering, no more anger, no more refusing, no more fear, no more tears, no more sadness, no more madness, just no more.
And you did it all YOUR WAY.
