A memorial service celebrating the life of Hattie Elizabeth Smart Burton will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 23, 2018, at Noel Memorial United Methodist Church. Officiating will be Rev. Mimi McDowell. A visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at the church prior to the service. A private graveside services will follow.
Hattie peacefully passed away at home on March 17, 2018. She was born on May 28, 1920, the seventh of nine children of Louis A. Smart and Miriam Hennigan Smart. Her siblings: Hazel, Frank, Ralph, Tera, Edmund, Julia, LA and Shirley, pre-deceased her. Hattie graduated from C.E. Byrd High School, Class of 1938, attended Norton Business School and worked for 13 years at Texas Eastern Corporation.
Hattie married her partner, Jeff A. Burton, in 1938 and their son, Tommie Louis Burton, was born in 1947 Tom passed away in 1993 and his widow, Judy Kinnebrew Burton, has been Hattie's primary care giver and constant companion for the last 2 ½ years.
Hattie had a great life, was blessed with many friends and loved the Lord with her whole heart. She and Jeff loved to travel particularly the back roads of the United States. She loved playing cards with her Bridge groups and cooking for family and friends. She was an active member of Noel United Methodist Church for sixty years serving on many committees over the years and was a member of "The Rasmusen" Sunday school class.
In addition to her daughter-in-law, Judy, she is survived by her grandson, Jason Burton and wife, Sylvia, great-grandsons, Jacob and Joshua Burton and step-grandson, Kenneth Williams. Also surviving her are nieces; Julianne Jackson, Shelia Calhoon, Mary Lyn Ball (Lon), Libby Gimmler (Bill), Miriam Langford, Robin Bolton (Roy), and nephews; Frank Smart III and Skip Peel.
The family would like to thank the nurses and care givers of St. Joseph Hospice as well as the Stat Home Health Care Group.
Honoring Hattie as pallbearers are John Duncan, Chris Middleton, Gary Lightfoot, Bill Gimmler, Roy Bolton, and Jeremy Kennedy. Honorary pallbearers include Dude Middlebrooks and James Goins.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials be made to: Noel United Methodist Church, 520 Herndon Street, Shreveport, Louisiana 71115, or to the charity of the donor's choice.
