Hazel Belcher Coffey

Our mother, Hazel Belcher Coffey, was born in Shreveport, Louisiana to Roy Hannah Belcher and Mary Ermine Scott Belcher on November 22, 1934, and went to be with Jesus on December 14, 2024 at her home in Coushatta. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 69 years Vernon Coffey, her in-laws Larry and Lillian Coffey, brother, C. W. Belcher, and her sister-in-law, Annell Price and husband, Darwin.

She is survived by her four children and their spouses: Mary Adkins and husband, David, David Coffey and wife, Cindy, Rainey Agent and husband, Sid, and Russell Coffey and wife, Tina. She is also survived by 15 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren.

Hazel was a loving, virtuous example of a Christian woman. She and Vernon raised their children in church and taught them the Bible, and she was dearly beloved by all who knew her. As one of her grandchildren wrote, “She leads with kindness, but was as tough as warranted. She loved her family hard; she loved fiercely; and she loved without reservation. After 90 years of a life well lived, she was ready to go home—to her true home in the arms of her Savior. Though our hearts ache for her, she will always remain a sweet voice that reminds us of how dearly we are loved.”

The family would like to give our deepest thanks to Mom’s faithful sitters, Cassandra Guye, Brenda Taylor, and Norma Newton. We also give our thanks to the employees of Rivertown Market, including Ricky Adams, Doug Adams, Dennis Gay, Jackie Newton, Carol Christen, Tracy Calhoun, Jan Emerson, Judy Stevens, and Dominque ”Red” Shivers. We also would like to thank Mom’s dear friends Wiley and Linda Rook, Harry and Barbara Moseley, and Joyce Dupree and neighbors, David and Georgie Hensley. Dr. Josh Cason, Dr. Sarah Herbel, and Bristol Hospice were all a great help to us during a difficult time.

Services for Hazel will be held at the First Baptist Church of Coushatta on Tuesday, December 17, 2024, at 11:00 AM with a visitation one hour prior to service time with Reverend Trevor Blair of the First Methodist Church of Coushatta officiating. Graveside services will follow in Clear Springs Cemetery in Martin, Louisiana. Serving as pallbearers will be her grandsons, Jake McCart, Jeremy McCart, Mark Coffey, Scott Coffey, Dr. David Coffey, Jr., Martin Adkins, and Mickey Adkins.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in memorial to the First Baptist Church, St. Jude’s Children Hospital or the charity of your choice.
