HELEN ELIZABETH HARRIS CALHOUN died peacefully in her sleep on December 23, 2016. She was born May 20, 1931 in Shreveport, LA, to Jack Edwin Harris and Elizabeth Conly Harris. Helen attended Byrd High School and Louisiana Tech, and married James M. Calhoun on Sept. 2, 1951. She and James moved to Mansfield, LA, in 1952. They were members of First Baptist Church from then until their deaths. Helen taught childrens' Sunday School and directed childrens' choirs for many years. She served as church organist for over 40 years. She taught piano lessons, had a ceramic shop at her home, enjoyed Mansfield Garden Club, DeSoto Arts Council, and American Hemerocallis Society. Helen hybridized, named and registered a number of daylily cultivars. James and Helen were in the dairy business, raised beef cattle, and owned Wag-a-Bag convenience stores for 28 years.
Funeral services honoring the life of Helen Elizabeth Harris Calhoun will be2:00 pm Tuesday, December 27, 2016 at the First Baptist Church and Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery. Visitation: 5:00 - 7:00 pm Monday December, 26, 2016 at Rose-Neath Funeral Home Mansfield, LA.
Helen and James raised three children. She was predeceased by her husband, James, and her son, James M. Calhoun, Jr. "Jim". Helen is survived by Jim's widow, Beth Calhoun, from Fort Worth, and their girls Meredith Robles (Victor), Jacqueline Nix, and Elyse Sullivan (Noah). Their second child, David Prentiss Calhoun, and his wife Janet, live in Mansfield and have three children, Jennie Weeks (Matt), Heather Berry (Paul) and Vanessa Wilson (Bracy). Their third child, Elizabeth Grant, and her husband Greg Grant, live in Bellingham, WA. Helen had six granddaughters and ten great-grandchildren. Special thanks go to her friends Bobbie and Evelyn, and her caretakers Frances, Eliza and Robin.
Helen was a beauty, inside and outside. She was talented artistically and musically. She was energetic, smart and fun to be around. Our hearts are broken, but we are comforted to know that she is now in heaven with Jesus and loved ones who went before.
