Helen Elliot

Helen Mary Sipos Elliott was loved, respected, and known as \"Nana\" by her two granddaughters, their adult friends, her 8 great-grandchildren and by all who knew her on earth and will greet with her with loving smiles from those who have gone before her. She was born in Detroit. Michigan on August 18, 1922 to Hungarian immigrants Steven Sipos and Pauline Juhasz Sipos, who left their homeland in 1911 and 1914 respectively. Her parents were from the same village but never knew each other until they met in New York City. Two weeks after meeting they were married. Helen met her husband Emmett Jackson Elliott (1919-1989) a marine on sick leave during WWII. They married six months later on January 3,1942 when friends gave them food and gas coupons to help pay for the wedding. From this loving 47 year union came two children, son Steven Nolan Elliott and Marsha Elliott Wilson. Like many during the war Helen was a patriot who volunteered out of her plush office job at Ypsilanti Ford Motor Company to be a \"Rosie the Riveter\" welding on the B29 airplane being manufactured at the plant. It only lasted a short time after her hair was caught in a drill from the riveter on top of the wing. After the war, she worked in many government positions such as a Draft Board Clerk in Trenton Michigan; Appeal Board Clerk for the Draft Board in Shreveport, Internal Revenue Service and retired with health issues from Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms in 1979. She was well respected for her work in U.S. Government among her colleagues and she was proud of her work with these departments. Helen filled her life with love of friends and family and kept busy with various volunteer positions and memberships in Home Extension of Logansport and Mansfield where she held several offices; Eastern Stars-Alf Garrett Chapter 123 Logansport; Beta Sigma Phi Sorority where she worked endlessly on the Christmas Lighting Project for city of Logansport; served on the Advisory Committee for Desoto Parish Council on Aging. Although her lifetime membership remained with the Hungarian Reform Church of Toledo Ohio, after moving to Logansport in 1969, she became unofficially a member of the Bethel Methodist Church in her community near Logansport. For years she played Mexican Train Dominoes with a special group and best friends Jean Beck and daughter Linda, Pat and W.E. Stevens, and Carl and Mary Smith. She loved oil painting, pottery painting and was one of the best cooks God gave this family. She had a passion for reading mysteries and love stories and was barely seen without a book in hand. She was bright, witty and cherished! She leaves behind one adoring daughter, Marsha E. Wilson and husband, Buff Wilson; granddaughter, Jordan Burnett Thaxton and husband, Frank Hardy Thaxton IV; and great-grandchildren, Caden Elliott Thaxton 9, Alexandra Burnett Thaxton 8, Kathryn Ann Thaxton 9, Frank Thaxton V age 7; step-grandson Will Wilson and wife, Carolynne; and two great-granddaughters Elizabeth Murray 12, Melissa Murray 9; step-grandson Reid Wilson and wife, Amye; and great-granddaughter Adelynn Grace Wilson 9, Tristan Thomas Wilson 8. She also leaves her son, Stephen Nolan Elliott an attorney from Convington, wife, Carolee Davis Elliott and daughter, Caroline Elliott. Nieces and cousins from Louisiana, Michigan, Texas, Minnesota will also never forget the strong person, matriarch of a family who we lovingly called her the \"little General\" because she was an in-charged kind of person! Visitation will be at Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Logansport, Friday evening from 4-7 p.m. Services will be held on Saturday morning October 15, 2016 at 10 a.m. at Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Logansport with graveside services at the Bethel United Methodist Church.
