Helen Janelle Samford, known affectionately as Nell, was born on August 25, 1928, in Center, Texas. She peacefully passed away in her home on Saturday June 29, 2024 at the age of 95. Nell spent her childhood on her parents' farm and grew up as the cherished only child of older parents, which shaped her into a quiet and reserved individual.
Despite her reserved nature, Nell dedicated her life to serving others with unwavering devotion. She found joy in small acts of kindness, such as delivering food from Piccadilly to those recovering at home and driving church members to medical appointments. Her extensive card ministry touched many lives, even after she was no longer able to write, as she continued to fervently pray for others.
Professionally, Nell was trained as an Administrative Assistant. Her career began at the Barksdale PX office from 1947 to 1950, followed by 35 years at Pennzoil until her retirement in 1985. Retirement was brief for Nell, as she then served for another 9 years in a part-time position at Christus Shumpert Medical Center from 1985 to 1994.
Nell was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Allie Samford, and her beloved cat Rosie. She is survived by many close friends who were like family to her. A graveside service to honor Nell's life will be held at Oaklawn Memorial Park next to Watson & Sons Funeral Home 1554 TX-7 E. Center, Texas on Saturday July 6th at 11am. Officiating will be Christopher Kunkel and Jerry Hodge.
The Kunkel family extends heartfelt gratitude to her devoted caregivers and sitters during her final years, including Susan Crossman, Betty Gerideau, Debbie Cox, and Sharon Bowens. Throughout her life, Nell was a faithful member of University Church of Christ.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to University Church of Christ, 2045 E 70th Street, Shreveport, Louisiana 71105.
Nell's legacy of quiet service and compassionate care will be cherished by all who were fortunate to know her. May she rest in eternal peace.
