Henry Gresham Temple, 82, was born on August 14, 1934 in Pineland, Texas. He was the eldest son of Henry Gresham Temple, Jr. and Anna Mary Davis Temple. He passed away at home in Shreveport, Louisiana, on August 29, 2016.
He was raised in Diboll, Texas, went to Lufkin High School, attended Texas A & M University, and graduated from the University of Houston. He was a member of Kappa Alpha fraternity.
Henry served his country in the US Army and was stationed at Fort Knox, Kentucky. He went through Officer's School, and was in the Armor division. He spent ten years on reserve and active duty, retiring with the rank of Captain.
Henry then returned to Lufkin, Texas and joined his father in business. He met and married Beth Campbell after a three-month courtship in 1957. In the early sixties they moved to Shreveport where they have lived for over fifty years, and he owned Temple Oil Company until retiring in 2003.
Henry most enjoyed hunting and traveled great lengths to Argentina, Canada, Mexico, and Uruguay to find birds. He loved training and rescuing dogs, and had two green thumbs. He raised the best tomatoes in town. He was a voracious reader, a huge Yankees fan, and gatherings with family and his many friends made him happy. Many of you reading this joined the Northwest Louisiana chapter of Quail Unlimited, at his insistence, which he oversaw to become the largest chapter in the nation.
Henry was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, John Newton Temple, his mother-in- law, Clifford Hale Campbell, and his beloved dog, Jack.
Henry is survived by his wife, Beth, and his only child, Samantha, and her husband, Erik Anderson, of Newport Beach, California. He has two grandchildren, Henry Gunnar Anderson and Mary Grace Anderson. Also, one brother, George Anderton Temple and wife Dorothy, of Lufkin; and one sister, Mary Virginia Temple Geggatt and husband Tom of Houston, Texas; and both of their children and grandchildren; and many cousins.
Henry was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Cathedral in Shreveport. A memorial service will be held Friday, September 2, 2016, at 10:00 am at St. Mark's. Officiating will be the Very Reverend Alston Johnson.
The family would like to give special thanks to Dr. Scott McRight for the personal attention and care that he gave Henry.
In his last days Henry was thankful to Jesus for allowing him to stay on this earth for so many fulfilling years, and he was ready to be with Him. He wanted his wife and daughter to know that he loved them dearly.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial donations be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or Shriners Hospital for Children.
