Herman W. Long went to be with the Lord on May 8, 2015 in Biloxi, Mississippi at the age of 87 from complications from a stroke.
He was born on May 24, 1927 in Dubberly, LA to Willie Chalmers Long, Sr. and Ella Miller Long. He is preceded in death by his parents and his brothers and sister: Willie Chalmers Long, Jr., and Benton Long, and Agnes Long Tyson.
Mr. Long is survived by his wife of 64 years, Grace Madden Long. He is also survived by his children: Brenda Long of Gulfport, MS and Reed Long of Coushatta, LA. Other survivors include his grandsons: Buddy Weaver and wife, Keri of Coushatta, LA, J. W. Long of Corpus Christi, TX; and his granddaughters, Jamie Weaver Shedden and her husband, Larry "Duck" Shedden of Gulfport, MS and Whitney Long Ross and her husband, Mark of Mooringsport, LA. He is survived by 8 great grandchildren, Bernadette Brockman and Johnathan Brockman of Gulfport, MS, Payton Thornton, Sam Weaver, Madden Weaver of Coushatta, LA, Creighton Ross and Remington Ross of Mooringsport, LA and Sarah Church and her husband, Jared of Hattiesburg, MS.
Mr. Long loved the Lord, he loved his family and he loved his church. He served faithfully at First Baptist Church in Coushatta for over 50 years. He was a Deacon, Sunday School Secretary; served on various committees until his health failed; and he then served as a greeter at the front door for the last several years.
Pallbearers will be Buddy Weaver, Larry "Duck" Shedden, J. W. Long, Harold Brumley, Rodney Dowden and Payton Thornton. Honorary pallbearers will be James Rhodes, A. J. Landry and the Deacons of the First Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 14, 2015 at 2:00 PM at the First Baptist Church in Coushatta, Louisiana with Brother William Hines and Dr. Nathan Davis officiating. Visitation will be Thursday from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at the church. Burial will be at Bistineau Cemetery in Heflin, LA.
In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to the Louisiana Baptist Children's Home or the First Baptist Church of Coushatta.
