Funeral services weer held for Horace Bert Heard, 84, at the Ruple Baptist Church near Homer on Thursday, Jan. 23, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Jerry Gill, officiating. Interment followed at the Ruple Community Cemetery. The family received friends at Rose-Neath Funeral Home, 405 E. 5th St. in Homer on Wednesday from 5-7 p.m.
Horace Bert Heard, from the Ruple Community, was born December 12, 1929 in Haynesville to Bert and Angie Heard. He passed away Monday, January 20, 2014 at Homer Memorial Hospital following a short illness. Horace served in the U.S. Navy as a radio operator during the Korean Conflict and retired from South Central Bell after more than 30 years of service.
Horace was preceded in death by his mother, Angie Heard and his father and step-mother, Bert and Elizabeth Heard of Homer; sister and brother-in-law, Barbara Ann and Johnny Hartsell of Shreveport; and brother and sister-in-law, Sammy and Cindy Heard of Leton.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Ruby Herring Heard; brother, Ellis Heard of Haughton; sister, Belinda Jones and husband, Bob of Homer; four sons, Richard Heard and wife, Tea', Robert Heard and wife, Terrie, and Casey Heard, all of Homer and Nat Heard, and soon-to-be daughter-in-law, Jessica Abshire of Lafayette; grandchildren, Mitzi, Carson and Cason Heard, Leah Walker, Daniel Speer, Ashleigh Dunn and Lori Ebarb; several great-grandchildren, cousins, nieces, nephews and close friends.
Pallbearers were Frank Herring, Everett Payne, Bob Volentine, Tony Volentine, Ray Heard and David "Buzzard" Sanders.
Honorary pallbearers were George Spillers, Gerald Prince and Jack Greene.
