Hubert "Hugh" Earl Greathouse

SHREVEPORT, LA - Hubert Earl Greathouse was born February 1, 1929 in Frankton, Indiana. He died October 18, 2015 in Shreveport, LA. Services will be held at Rose-Neath Southside Chapel on Thursday, October 22, 2015 at 12:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Forest Park West Cemetery. Pastor Dennis Aaron will be officiating. The family will be available for visitation on Wednesday, October 21, 2015 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Hugh was a true patriot, having served in both the U.S. Army and the U.S. Air Force. While in the Army, Hugh served in the 508th Infantry in the 11th Airborne in Fort Campbell, KY. He saw combat in Korea and was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star for heroism. After his discharge from the Army, Hugh enlisted in the U. S. Air Force and served for 11 years, retiring in 1968. After his retirement from the Air Force, Hugh worked for Western Electric, later AT&T. Upon his retirement from AT&T, Hugh dedicated his energy to veteran's causes. He helped to start the Shreveport chapter of Purple Heart and both he and his wife, Dola Jene, served in leadership positions with the local chapter. He volunteered at the Veterans Hospital, and with many other veterans' organizations. Hugh was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Lillian Greathouse, his sisters, Norma, Mary Helen and Lucille, and his step-brother, Cletus White. He lost his wife of 46 years, Dola Jene Greathouse in 2005. He is survived by his second wife, Peggy Willis Greathouse and Hubert's sons and their families; Mike Thompson and wife, Debbie, Joe Thompson and wife, Kay, and Tommy Thompson and wife, Julie; grandchildren, Mandi Gordon and husband, Phillip, Sheena Shipley, Tyler Thompson and wife, Madison, and Laura Thompson; great-grandchildren, Trace and Preslee Gordon and Alexis and Nolan Thompson. Peggy's son, George Willis and wife, Becky, and children Meagan and Lauren; step-brother, Carlis White; brother-in-law, Gilbert Bonnette, and his sons and their families. Honoring Hugh as pallbearers will be Tyler Thompson, Phillip Gordon, Donald Bonnette, Jr., George Willis, Richard Williford, and Billy Lewis. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials may be made to Disabled Veterans, P.O. Box 14301, Cincinnati, OH 45250-0301 or online at www.dav.org. The family would like to say a special thanks to all the Doctors, nurses and staff at Willis Knighton North, Willow Ridge Nursing Home, LifeCare and NWLA Veterans Home for the wonderful care they gave to Hugh. Hugh was a patriot, a family man and a hard worker. The world is a better place because of him. We will miss him dearly.
