A funeral service honoring the life of Ila Faye Downer Eakin will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, May 28, 2021 at Kings Highway Christian Church, 806 Kings Hwy, Shreveport, Louisiana. Reverend Steve Lesher will officiate the service. Visitation will be held at 10:00 a.m. until service time. Interment will take place at Forest Park Cemetery West, 4000 Meriwether Road, Shreveport, Louisiana.
Ila Faye Downer Eakin was born May 31, 1923 in Center, Texas and passed away Tuesday, May 25, 2021 in Shreveport, Louisiana.
Mrs. Eakin is preceded in death by her parents, Clyde C. Downer and Felicia Hurst Downer; her husband, James Granville Eakin; and her grandson, Barry Clyde Eakin, Jr.
Left to cherish her memory are her three children, Lee Carol O'Brien and husband, Mike, James G. Eakin, Jr. and wife, Pam, and Barry Clyde Eakin and wife, Carol Renee; six grandchildren, Michael H. O'Brien, Jr., Dr. James G. Eakin and wife, Heather, Robert Allen Eakin and wife, Emily, Tamara Renee Fontenot, and Erica Michelle Murrell and husband, Mark; ten great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Eakin moved from Center, Texas to Shreveport when she entered Centenary College of Louisiana. She majored in English and taught school briefly. She was a devoted wife for 63 years until her husband's death.
Mrs. Eakin and her family joined Broadmoor Christian Church in 1960. Over the years she served in many capacities including being an Elder. She loved teaching her covenant bible class for many years. She loved to sing and was in the choir for fifty years. After the closing of Broadmoor Christian Church, Mrs. Eakin went back to her home church, Kings Highway Christian Church, where she enjoyed her Sunday School class.
Honoring Mrs. Eakin as pallbearers will be her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Serving her as honorary pallbearers will be the KHCC Keystone Class and former Broadmoor Christian Church members.
A special thanks to her care givers at the Glen, especially Brian and Erica, and Sarah at St. Joseph Hospice.
