Irma Laverne Hill Matthews was born on April 28, 1929 in Gilbert, Louisiana to parents, Basil and Mae Hill. Irma, lovingly known as Mammaw, went to Heaven on Tuesday, April 18, 2023 to get to spend eternity with the Savior she lived for all of her earthly days.
Mammaw, with her black coffee, culottes, and bright fuchsia lipstick, was a one-of-a-kind, larger-than-life character. She loved the Lord with all her heart, and she wanted everyone else to as well. You could find Irma teaching, serving, and loving her church family, working at Brammer Engineering, or traveling. She always loved to go! Mammaw got to travel the world by plane, by camel, by elephant, but best of all, in the front passenger seat next to Pappaw “Red” holding an atlas and peeling an apple. She loved to have adventures, but to those who knew her, she was the adventure. Her loved ones can only imagine the adventure going on now in Glory.
She is preceded in death by husband, B.E. Matthews; her parents; her siblings, B.L. Hill, Gladys Hill, Elsie Bjorn, and Anne Baker; brother-in-law, Bill Baker, and many dear friends.
She leaves behind her daughter and son-in-law, Sherry Cordero and Noel Cordero; grandchildren, Jenni and Dr. Dustie Dunn, Chris and Samantha Cordero; great-grandchildren, Jax, John, Jeb, Chase and Cameron; many nieces and nephews; and her dear Woodridge Baptist Church family and friends.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 21, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. at Rose-Neath Funeral Home, 2500 Southside Dr., Shreveport, Louisiana. Burial will follow at Forest Park East Cemetery, 3700 St. Vincent Ave. in Shreveport. A visitation will take place on Thursday, April 20, 2023 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Officiating the service will be Mammaw’s grandson-in-law, Dr. Dustie Dunn.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that gifts be made to the T. Floyd Davis World Missions Offering at Woodridge Baptist Church.
