Funeral services for Irma Immel Mecom, 97, will be held on Friday, September 13, 2024 at Rose-Neath Funeral Home, 1815 Marshall St., Shreveport, Louisiana. A visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until service time. A private graveside will be held at Forest Park Cemetery, St. Vincent. Officiating the service will Pastor Perry Culver of Christ Lutheran Church.
Irma was born on the family farm in the Texas Hill Country near Stonewall, Texas on October 29,1926, the daughter of Richard and Hulda Immel. She died at Shreveport, Monday, September 9, 2024. A graduate of Fredericksburg High School, she married WW II veteran and native Shreveporter, Philip H Mecom, Jr. in 1947, and they both attended the University of Texas until his graduation. In 1950 Philip rejoined the Army, and the couple moved to Germany, where their son was born. Following discharge, the family moved to Shreveport in the mid-1950's and their two daughters followed.
Irma remained in Shreveport for life, but not so her soon to be ex-husband, who with the family mostly raised rejoined the Army and moved. She remade her life from homemaker, working at International Paper until retirement and remained active at Redeemer Lutheran Church, serving as church organist through the church merger into Christ Lutheran Church. She enjoyed playing the domino game ‘42’ and was considered an excellent cook. She was always there for her family, a woman of indomitable spirit and proud to be part of ‘The Greatest Generation’.
Irma was preceded in death by daughters, Pamela Mecom Snider and Jane Mecom Winkler and siblings, Lucille Morris and Herbert Immel. She is survived by son, Trey Mecom; grandchildren, Philip Mecom IV, Mindy Mecom Erickson, Michelle Mecom O’Malley, Sean Winkler and Noelle Winkler, as well as four great-grandchildren.
