Jackie Salley Pennell

Jackie Salley Pennell was born on September 23, 1937 in Bernice, Louisiana. She left this earth for her heavenly home on Monday, March 25, 2024 in Tyler, Texas. A celebration of her life will be held on Friday, March 29, 2024 at the Memorial Chapel in Broadmoor Baptist Church, 4110 Youree Dr., Shreveport, Louisiana at 2:30 p.m. with Dr. Tom Harrison and Dr. John Sullivan officiating. This will be preceded by a private, family only graveside service.

Jackie was born to Curtis Jackson and Era Tubbs Salley. She joined Broadmoor Baptist Church with her family after moving to Shreveport at the age of five. She accepted Christ as her savior at a young age and truly lived by that faith all her life. She loved growing up in Shreveport with cherished family and friends. She was a graduate of C.E. Byrd High School and then received her BA in education from Baylor University. She met her beloved husband, Tom, while passing popcorn to him and a group of other Baylor men guarding the campus from outside pranks on a Homecoming Eve. They married in July of 1960 and loved each other deeply and completely in an exemplary marriage until his passing in 2010. She was a dedicated teacher for most of her young adult life with only a few years’ break to be a full time mom. Her “dream job” was teaching kindergarten at Broadmoor Baptist Church’s Weekday Preschool program. She was a teacher there from 1971-1981 and served as the director from 1982 until retiring in 1998. She also directed the church’s Day Camp during those years. Through her talent, dedication, and incredible faith, she positively impacted countless young lives. In later years she relished the role of “Gran” to her grandchildren and spending time with Tom. Jackie lived a life accentuated by a positive attitude and a deep love of Jesus and her family. Her love and care nurtured us and taught us how to do the same. Family and friends alike will always remember her sweet smile, happy disposition, positive attitude and wonderful sense of humor.

She was preceded to heaven by her husband of 50 years Tom; son, Craig; parents, Jack and Era Salley, and sister and brother-in-law Grace and Jack Phillips.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Jeffrey and Elizabeth Pennell; her daughter-in-law, Ninnette Kinnebrew; grandchildren, Lindsay and Taylor Leander, Shelby and Clint Bickham, Collin and Meg Pennell, Abby Pennell and Thomas Pennell and great-grandchildren, Lawson, Leighton and Ellis Leander, Charlie Pennell and Gray and Cameron Bickham. She is also survived by niece and grand-nephew Salley and Christopher Bardwell as well as her dear first cousins Charles and Paul Salley.

Honoring Jackie as pallbearers will be Collin Pennell, Thomas Pennell, Clint Bickham, Taylor Leander, Christopher Bardwell, Charles Salley and Paul Salley.

Memorial donations may be made to the Broadmoor Baptist Church Weekday Preschool, 4110 Youree Dr., Shreveport, Louisiana.
