Ret. SMSgt. Jay Rex Gammill, Jr.
SHREVEPORT, LA - Senior Master Sergeant (Retired) Jay Rex Gammill, Jr. has died. In keeping with his wishes he will be buried at Forest Park Cemetery on St. Vincent Ave., Tuesday, August 25, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. Friends are invited to join the family for this service. A memorial service will be conducted Wednesday, August 26, 2015 in the chapel of First United Methodist Church at 11:00 a.m. A reception will follow the service.
Rex was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Marie Abney Gammill; and his only son, the Rev. Mr. Randell "Randy" Lee Gammill, a United Methodist minister. Rex is survived by his daughter-in-law, the Rev. Mrs. Nancy Gammill; his grandsons, Mark and Matthew Gammill; his great-grandchildren, Dylan and Emma Gammill of Platte City, MO.
Rex, a native of Shreveport, a graduate of Byrd High School, was a member of First Methodist Church before he joined the Air Corp in 1942. He served in the Pacific during WWII as a flight engineer and retired after 26 years in the Air Force. He, Hazel Marie and "Randy" returned to First Methodist Church in 1968 where Rex became the longest serving member of the choir.
