Jenness Doniphan Courtney, Jr., age 90, passed away on August 19, 2017, at home in the presence of his family in Shreveport, LA.
J. D. grew up and lived in Ida, LA, and lived in Shreveport, LA, for most of his life. He was a beloved husband and father, and a life-long educator.
A graduate of Northwestern State University in 1956, J. D. went on to receive his Masters degree in education from the University of Arkansas in 1960. Prior to this, he served in the United States Army and was stationed in Germany during the Korean War.
He started his education career as a teacher at Vivian Junior High School in 1956. Starting in 1960, he served as principal at various elementary schools throughout Caddo Parish for 34 years.
J. D. took pride in serving as a Sunday School teacher and a deacon at Caddo Heights Baptist Church and Woodridge Baptist Church.
J. D. was preceded in death by his father Jenness and mother Levonia, brothers Jim and Donald, and sisters Faye, Bob, and Mary. He is survived by his wife or 54 years, Dixianna; children Jenness III and his wife Teresa, Claudia Courtney Powell and husband Greg, and Kern Courtney and his wife Jennifer; sisters Ina Joyce Craig and Delma Ruth Brown; grandchildren Mary Ellen, Jake, Josh, Sam, Virginia, Rainer, and Fehn; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation at Rose-Neath Southside will be held on Monday, August 21st, from 6-8pm. Funeral services will be held at Woodridge Baptist Church on Tuesday, August 22nd, at 10am. Interment will follow at Munnerlyn Chapel Cemetery in Ida, LA. Honorary pallbearers will include the Woodridge Baptist Church deacon body and his Sunday School class.
