Shreveport, Louisiana - A memorial service celebrating the life of Joann "Situ" Sonom Vekovius, 76, will be held at 3 p.m., Friday, December 22, 2017 in Frost Chapel at First Baptist Church, Shreveport with Ronney Joe Webb officiating.
Joann was born on June 8, 1941, in Detroit, MI, to George and Sara Sonom and entered into eternity with the Lord on December 15, 2017. She loved her family, friends and the Lord. She enjoyed large family gatherings and made sure to remember something for everyone. Sometimes it was a small token that reflected a favorite hobby or interest. Sometimes it was a favorite dish. She always paid attention to the details of those she loved and took every opportunity to make them feel special and unique. She was a very giving person and treated everyone with a loving attitude. She had the most amazing sense of humor and enjoyed laughing often. It was almost impossible to keep from joining her in her joy and laughter, as it was so contagious. She was a fun-loving and caring mother, situ (grandmother) and friend, leading her life with a servant\'s heart. A graduate of Wayne State University, she worked at Crystal Oil Company as an accountant and with her son, Bryan Vekovius, MD as a bookkeeper. When able, she attended Word of Life Church.
Joann was preceded in death by her parents, George and Sara Sonom and her brother, Ronald Sonom. Left to cherish her memory are her sons, Bryan Vekovius and wife, Stephanie, and Stephen Vekovius and wife, Kecia; grandchildren: Will, Nathan, Sam, Sophia and Vivian; siblings, Lillian Macoule and Donald Sonom; her sisters-in-law, Mary Z. Sonom and Mary A. Sonom; her nieces: Debbie Sonom, Sara Rae Sonom, and Ruth Ann Sonom; and special family friend, Rodney Sermons.
The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Dr. Richard Sipes, Dr. Timothy Talbert, Dr. Christopher Sockrider, Dr. Lane Rosen, Dr. Anil Veluvalu, Dr. Albert Krause, Dr. Laura Kimball-Ravari, Dr. Tharwat Ghattas, nurses and other professionals for their excellent care and compassion given to her over the last few years.
The family suggests memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
