Joe Sloan

Graveside services celebrating the life of Joe Sloan will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 29, 2025 at Highland Cemetery, in Mansfield, Louisiana, with Rev. Jimmy Price officiating. A visitation will be held at Rose-Neath Funeral Home, 943 Polk Street, Mansfield, Louisiana on Friday, March 28, 2025, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.

In the 98 years that Joe Sloan lived, he was so many things to so many people. He was a son, a husband, a Christian leader, a father, a Joe Joe, and a friend. Joe truly had a heart of gold.

Joseph Mason Sloan, 98, of Mansfield, Louisiana passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on March 25, 2025. Joe was born in Shreveport and grew up in Grand Cane. He graduated high school from Mansfield, where he met the love of his life, Lillie Mae. On June 10, 1950 they were wed and shared 73 years of their lives together. He was the proud father of two marvelous Children, Karen Denise Sloan and Joseph Steven Sloan.

He wore many hats throughout his nearly 100 years of life. Beginning in 1937, at the age of 10, he worked at the local "picture show" selling tickets and concessions. During his teenage years he worked on a seismograph crew for the Pullman Company on the railroad. After graduating high school, he enlisted in the United States Airforce. He completed his training at France E Warren Airforce Base in Cheyenne, Wyoming and was stationed at Carswell Airforce Base in Fort Worth, Texas. Joe worked for the United States Postal Service for 27 years, retiring in 1987. He then worked as a special deputy for DeSoto Parish Sheriff's office. Joe drove cars for Mansfield Auto World until he was 90 years old.

Awaiting his arrival in heaven are many precious family members including his wife of 73 years, Lillie Mae Sloan; his parents, Roy John and Jessie Elizabeth Perkins of Mansfield; his beautiful daughter Karen Denise Sloan, and his brothers-in-law Allison Goldsby and Selvestion Jimes.

Throughout his life it was his pleasure to serve and worship the Lord at Emmanuel Baptist Church. He was ordained as a deacon of the church in June of 1961. He also taught Sunday School for many years. It was his love of Christ and his Christian heart that led he and Lillie Mae to raise the sons of their late daughter Karen as their own.

He is survived by his son Joseph Steven Sloan, daughter-in-law, Ellen Sloan and his granddaughter Whitney Paige Muse and her husband, Cody Muse; his son Jonathon Cole Robinson, daughter-in-law Barbara Robinson and granddaughter Anna Grace Robinson; his grandson Scott Sloan Sistrunk; his sisters-in-law Patsy Ann Jimes and Jaunice Goldsby and their children; special family John and Cindy Nappier and their daughters, and so many special friends that were family.

The Sloan family would like to extend a special thank you to all members of Emmanuel Baptist Church past and present.

One of Joe’s favorite Bible passages reminds us of how Jesus comforted his disciples in John 14, he said “Do not let your heart be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there it prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going.”

Joe requested his honorary pall bearers be Paul Evans, John Graham, James Lynch, Barry Rambin, Joe Craig Fleningan, Peyton Guy, Jack Guy, Bubba Locke and Bubba Woods because each of you are were dear to his heart.
