SHEVEPORT, LA - Funeral services celebrating the Life of John Woodward Carpenter, 103, will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, May 6, 2018 at Noel Memorial United Methodist Church, with Rev. Mimi McDowell officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Park Cemetery, St. Vincent Ave., Shreveport, LA. The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. until service time at the church.
John was born September 18, 1914 in Minneapolis, MN to Katie Nelson Carpenter and John Irvin Carpenter and passed away April 29, 2018, at his residence in Shreveport, LA with his family by his side. He grew up in Ohio where he graduated from Batesville High School. John attended Centenary College of Louisiana. He was a WWII Veteran and participated in the D-Day Landing. John served in the Battle of the Bulge and received the Bronze Star and French Legion of Honor. He served six years in the United States Army and thirty-seven years in the Civil Service at Barksdale Air Force Base. John was a member of Noel United Methodist Church since 1949 where he was an usher and taught Sunday school, he helped establish the food pantry ministry in which he was a long-time volunteer. He was one of the founders of the Food Bank of Northwest Louisiana. John loved gardening, tennis, square dancing, poetry and was an avid reader.

John is preceded in death by his wife Nelwyn Sledge Carpenter, his parents, six brothers and sisters. Left to cherish his memory are his sons, Russell Carpenter of Shreveport, LA, Brian Carpenter of Knoxville, TN and Mark Carpenter of Bay St. Louis, MS; daughters, Eileen Bettevy and husband Cecil of Shreveport, LA, Diane Jennings of Shreveport, LA and Abby Averett and husband Joe of Shreveport, LA; twelve grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild, "We Love You Papaw", two nephews and one great-niece.
Honoring John as pallbearers will be Robson Knight, Bronson Haley, Kit Carpenter, Brandon Carpenter, Austin Quijas, and Ashur Hall.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials be made to Noel Memorial United Methodist Church, or The Noel Food Pantry, both at 520 Herndon, Shreveport, LA 71104.
