Irving, TX - John Smylie Coon, beloved father and grandpa went to be with the Lord on March 23, 2015 in his home in Irving Texas.
Funeral services for Mr. Coon will be held at Rose-Neath Southside on Saturday, March 28th at 2:00 p.m. Services will be conducted by Bobby Cunningham, an evangelist of the Church of Christ, and Lyndon Cox, an elder of the Church of Christ in Grapevine. Graveside services will follow at Forest Park East Cemetery. Visitation will be at Rose-Neath Southside on Friday, March 27th from 6 to 8 p.m.
Mr. Coon was born in Shreveport, LA on August 3, 1926, and was a member of the Church of Christ for more than 70 years, being a long-time member of the South Shreveport Church of Christ, and later, the Church of Christ in Grapevine, Texas. He graduated Fair Park High School in 1943 and in 1954 he married his sweetheart, Emma Dean.
He served in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged as a first lieutenant. After the army, he worked for the U.S. Postal Service as a letter carrier for more than 33 years. Following his retirement from the Post Office, Mr. Coon worked as a tax preparer for H & R Block for 27 years. In 2002, on his 76th birthday, and one year after the death of his wife Emma, Mr. Coon moved to Irving, Texas, to live with son, Donald and his family. During this time he enjoyed working, spending time with family, and attending baseball games and band concerts with his grandsons.
Mr. Coon was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Emma Dean Coon; his parents, Noah Webster Coon and Mildred Derotha Anders Coon; and three brothers, Roy W. Coon, Rexford Coon, and L. Harold Coon. He is survived by son John S. (Jackie) Coon Jr. of Keithville; and son Donald W. Coon, daughter-in-law Robin, and grandsons JD Coon and Jason Coon, all of Irving, Texas; one sister India Eisenbach of Jonesborough, Tennessee; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be nephew Greg Gander; great nephew Daniel Gander; and brothers in Christ, Archie Jones, Bryon Spinks, Curtis Webb, Latorris Webb, Wesley Cockrum, and Jerry Wahl. Honorary pallbearers are nephew Randy Coon and great nephew Jared Coon.
The family would like to thank the Midway Church of Christ, the Queensborough Church of Christ, the South Shreveport Church of Christ and the Church of Christ in Grapevine, Texas for all their love, encouragement and support during this time.
