HOMER, LA: Funeral services were held for Mr. John Douglas McKenzie, 94, at First United Methodist Church in Homer, LA on Saturday, May 14, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. R. B. Moore, officiating. Interment followed in Arlington Cemetery of Homer. The family received friends at the church Saturday prior to the service from 1-2 p.m. Mr. McKenzie was born September 10, 1921 in Camp, LA to Precious Mae Dickerson and William Earl McKenzie, Sr. He entered into rest on Wednesday, May 11, 2016 in Homer, LA. Mr. McKenzie attended LA Tech before serving his country in the US Army as Staff Sargent from July of 1942 until an honorable discharge in October of 1945. He traveled as a salesman for the hardware industry with Buhrman-Pharr Company. Mr. McKenzie was a life-long member of FUMC of Homer where he served as Sunday School teacher for over 25 years and Lay speaker. Mr. McKenzie was preceded in death by his parents and his wife; Eleanor Grace Bonnette McKenzie; a brother, William Earl McKenzie, Jr.; and two sisters, Margaret McKenzie DeLoach and Christine McKenzie Brinson. He is survived by eight nieces, Linda Taylor and J. Roddy of Monroe, LA, Kendra Martin and Matt of Greenboro, NC, Carol Mathews and Mike of Bossier City, LA, Kaye Dalme and Charles of Cloutierville, LA, Ann Gibson and Jim of Houston, TX, Karen Hill and Robert of Plano, TX, Sandra Brinson Reynolds and Everett of Carthage, TX and Sharon Griffin of Dallas, TX; six nephews, John William McKenzie and Connie of Ruston, LA, Terry Bonnette and Jan of West Monroe, LA, Ron Bonnette and Linda of Rosharon, TX, Eugene Spikes of Montgomery LA, William Douglas "Doug" Brinson and Glynrose of San Antonio, TX, and Edwin H. Brinson, Jr. and Zhaohang of Fate, TX; along with other relatives and dear friends. Mr. McKenzie's family would like to express their deep gratitude for care given by Dr. Scott Haynes, the staff of Claiborne Memorial Medical Center and dear friend and caregiver, Camille Abshire, for her devotion and unfailing love throughout the years. Special thanks, also to caregivers Jessie Cooper, Louella Buggs and Sue Weathers for their care and compassion. Pallbearers were Andrew Abshire, Jimmy Hamilton, Jim Hatch, Jeff Humphries, Doodle Johnston and John McCowan III. Honorary pallbearer were Jim Anderson, Stuart Butler, Buddy Carey, John Poss and Jerry Torbet In lieu of flowers honoring Mr. McKenzie, his family suggests memorials be to First United Methodist Church of Homer.
