John "Sam" Smith

A celebration of life will be held for Mr. John “Sam” Smith at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 24, 2023, at Emmanuel Baptist Church, 2042 Highway 519, Arcadia, LA 71001. Bro. Jeff Smart will officiate.

Sam was born August 25, 1930, in Cleburne, Texas to Claude and Olga Smith. He went to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, May 22, 2023, at his home in Homer, LA with his loving family by his side.

Sam married the love of his life, Mary Chandler Smith in 1951. He worked as a carpenter for Ruston Lumber and Supply and Woodsmith Molding. After retiring, he continued on with woodworking as a hobby. Sam was a faithful member of Emmanuel Baptist Church. He lived his life for the Lord and walked by his Christian faith. Sam was a wonderful husband, a loving father, and a doting grandfather. He will be greatly missed by his church family, his loving friends, and those who knew him.

Sam is preceded in death by his parents Claude and Olga Smith, son Michael Smith, sisters; Grace Foote, Melba Underwood, and Mary Burt, and by brother Otho Smith.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of over 70 years, Mary Smith, daughter, Cindy Clark and husband Woody, sister Faye Smith, grandchildren; Carrie, Leah, Jonathan, and Mary Helen, great grandchildren; Seline, Tristan, Spencer, Rolf, Charles, Wesley, and David, and by numerous other nieces, nephews, and other loving family members.

Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or to The Gideons International.
