Dr. Johnnie Pearl Austin was born October 6, 1922 in Stanley, LA (formerly Oak Grove Community) at the Austin homestead, which was homesteaded by his grandparents, Allen Jefferson Austin and Mary Elizabeth Brown Austin in 1887.
He passed away November 11, 2014 after a short illness at Cornerstone Hospital in Bossier City. Services celebrating his life will be at Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Logansport.
The family will receive visitors from 4-8pm on Friday, November 14. Services will be conducted by Pastor Ron Brown and Reverend David Permenter at 10:30 am on Saturday, November 15, with burial to follow at Prude Cemetery on Highway 84.
He was a 1939 graduate of Oak Grove High School, now Stanley High School; 1943 graduate of Louisiana State Normal College, now Northwestern State University; 1946 graduate of Loyola University of the South, School of Dentistry. He was honorably discharged from the United States Army Dental Corps as a Captain after serving with the Air Force.
Dr. Austin was a member of the Northwest District Dental Society, Louisiana Dental Association and American Dental Association with a lifetime membership certificate. He practiced Dentistry for a total of 45 years, two years in the Air Force and 43 years in Logansport.
He was a member of the Sons of the Confederacy, New Bethany Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Dr. Austin was a supporter of the Cumberland Presbyterian Children's Home in Denton, TX, and established an Endowment Fund several years ago.
Dr. Austin was born and lived his entire life at the Austin homestead except for absences during college and time spent in service during World War II. He had 44 first cousins, all of which preceded him in death.
Dr. Austin was preceded in death by his parents John G. Austin and Nellie Moorman Austin, sisters Mary Austin Smith and Jo Nell Austin, brother Major Cecil Austin, sister-in-law Marguerite Austin Laden, brother-in-law, John T. Smith. Survivors include dear friend Daniel Wisinger, long-time family friends Queenie Rogers, Monroe Grey, and Johnnie Ruth Gatlin, nephews Randolph G. Austin, Claude E. Smith and wife Sue Ellen, niece Colinda Austin Stailey, great nephews Ed Austin, Stephen Brenner, Todd Brenner, Adam Smith, great nieces Jill Nagle, Heather Volman and Amy Smith, plus several great, great nephews and nieces.
