He entered Navy OCS, receiving a commission. After training, he was assigned as an Airborne CIC Officer in an Early Warning Squadron. After four years, he was released from active duty, and he joined the Naval Reserve, where he served as a Navigator and Tactical Coordinator in an Anti-Submarine Warfare Patrol Squadron. He accumulated 2150 flight hours and retired as a Lieutenant Commander after 20 years of service. As a poor country boy, he was honored to serve as a Naval Flight Officer.
Jon had a distinguished career as an agent with the LSU Agricultural Center. He was known for his knowledge of plants, animals and the environment. He was referred to as a walking encyclopedia by one of his co-workers. He was honored as an Outstanding Alumnus of the LSU College of Agriculture and received the Distinguished Service Award of the State and National County Agents Association.
