Lloyd Mabry \"Slim\" Rainer completed his life journey of 91 years on July 1, 2021, at his home in the care of his family. He was born to Warren Mabry and Gladys Agnes Dunagan Rainer on February 9, 1930, in Torrance, California. During the Great Depression, Warren temporarily moved his family to California to find work. Lloyd spent his elementary years in the Summer Grove Community in Shreveport, LA. He moved to Cove, Arkansas with his sister, Billie Jo Campbell, when his parents bought a general mercantile business. Following his graduation from Cove High School in 1948, he studied at the University of Arkansas graduating from the School of Pharmacy in 1952. Lloyd married Wanda Louise "Tommie" Owen on July 27, 1952. He was inducted into the U.S. Army in 1953 and was stationed at Fort Carson, Colorado until his Honorable Discharge in 1955. Lloyd and Tommie moved to Shreveport where he began his professional career as a pharmacist. After gaining experience working for other druggists, he realized his dream of owning his own business and launched Summer Grove Pharmacy at 2865 Summer Grove Drive in 1958. Within a few years, Tommie founded The Candle Cave located in the adjacent former bank building selling candles and gift merchandise. Their business flourished serving the community for over 35 years. On several notable occasions, Lloyd and his staff filled over 500 prescriptions in one day. He also provided prescription delivery to the community with the Iconic "Pill Mobiles" never accepting a single penny for the service. In the tradition of his parents, Lloyd was a caring, giving businessman and practitioner of his faith to ensure he gave the extra measure to tend to his customer's needs. His dignified and respectful approach to others created life-long friendships. Lloyd and Tommie were married for 30 years and had three children. Lloyd married Dortha Ruth Johnson on March 29, 1997, adding her three children to the family. Ruth was a loving wife and by his side as he passed. Ruth was a stalwart, steadfast partner adding abundant fulfillment to their intertwined life together. Ruth was Lloyd's best friend and caregiver who will always be loved and respected for the demands, tolerances, sacrifices, and contributions she made to be the best she could be and bring out the best in Lloyd. Lloyd was a long-time member of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Shreveport, Louisiana. He also served on the Board of Directors for Grawood Christian School. Lloyd had a life-long passion for antique cars and trucks and restored examples of his favorite Fords. Over 25 plus years, he did not miss a show at Petit Jean Mountain Car Show. He was a very early active member of The Arklatex Antique and Classic Car Club in Shreveport, Louisiana, and The American Truck Historical Society "ATHS". He was always referred to as "Dr. Rainer" by the many life-long friends he made thru his passion for his cars over the years. Lloyd is preceded in death by his parents, Warren and Gladys Rainer and first wife, Wanda Louise "Tommie" Leopard. Lloyd is survived by his spouse, Dortha Ruth Johnson Rainer; sister, Billie Jo Campbell and husband, Robert J. Campbell of Mansfield, Texas; children, Michael Lloyd and wife, Marian Holcomb Rainer of Crestview, Florida, Cindy Lucretia Rainer-Brown and husband, Chris Brown of Keithville, Louisiana, and Joel Kirby and wife, Laura Rainer of Longview, Texas; and stepchildren, Donna Sue and Randy McInnis of Shreveport, Louisiana, Teresa Dianne and Jimmie Dale Dunn of Beckville, Texas, and Alan Lloyd Evans of Dalhart, Texas. Lloyd had six nephews and two nieces. Lloyd had 13 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren. Visitation will be on Tuesday, July 6, 2021 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Rose-Neath South, 2500 Southside Dr., Shreveport, Louisiana. The burial service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 7, 2021 at the Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Cove, Arkansas. Pallbearers with be Michael Rainer, Joel Rainer, Sean Bardwell, Jimmie Dunn, Reed Rainer, and Asa Bardwell. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials may be made in Lloyd's name to any charity your heart leads you to; he loved St. Jude's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee.
