Gibsland - Lois Neal Carter Stewart, 92, passed away on October 11th, 2017, in her home surrounded by her loving family.
Lois was born in Gibsland, Louisiana on June 29, 1925. She lived in Gibsland her whole life where she met her husband of 55 years, James Douglas Stewart. The two owned Stewart\'s Grocery in Gibsland for over 37 years. She was a very hard worker and if you came into the store or called to place an order, she would have helped you with a smile on her face.
When she was not working at the store, Lois was busy as an active member of First Baptist Church Gibsland. She was involved with the WMU and served on most all of the committees over the years. She loved the Lord and was often found sitting in the kitchen reading her bible.
Lois also served as the dispatcher for the Gibsland Volunteer Fire Department for over 40 years. Her husband served as Chief and the phone for the fire department rang in their house and store. The "fire phone" interrupted many family dinners, holidays and led to many sleepless nights but she was dedicated to serving the community.
Her family lovingly referred to her as Gran. She loved to cook and her family loved to eat. She always fixed everyone's favorite foods, no one ever went hungry. Whether for family, church or just someone in need, she was the first to show up with pimento cheese sandwiches and pound cake. She was loved by her family, friends and her community and will be greatly missed.
Lois was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Douglas Stewart, her daughter, Annette Stewart Smith, her parents, Hettie Lou Ouzts Carter and Carroll Monroe Carter, her sister, Carolyn Carter Winslett; and an infant brother, Carroll Monroe Carter, Jr.
She is survived by her son, James Nathan Stewart and wife Sandy, one sister, Patta Jane Carter Kihneman; 5 grandchildren, Amy Smith Kingsolver and husband Matthew, Anna Smith O\'Donnell and husband J.D., David Covell and wife Jennifer, James Curtis Stewart and wife Paige and Jackie Stewart Gravois and husband Shaun; eight great-grandchildren, Landon Stewart O\'Donnell, Briana Christine Stewart, Jarrett Douglas Kingsolver, Owen Bernard O\'Donnell, Jake Calvin Kingsolver, Nathan Elliot Gravois, Cooper Joseph Gravois and Phillip Curtis Gravois.
Visitation will be on Sunday, October 15th from 4-6 p.m. at Rose Neath Funeral Home in Arcadia. Services will be held on Monday, October 16th at 10 a.m. at First Baptist Church Gibsland. Interment will follow in Mount Lebanon Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorials be given to Louisiana Baptist Children's Home, Rolling Hills Ministries, or St. Jude's.
