HOMER, LA: A graveside service will be held for Mr. Lonzy Dale Grigsby, Jr., 85 at Arlington Cemetery under the direction of Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Homer on Monday, March 5, 2018 at 1:00 P.M., with Rev. Brian Thurman and Rev. R.B. Moore, officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 10:00 A.M. to noon on Monday, prior to the service. He was better known as "L.D." L.D. was born on November 16, 1932, in Bernice, LA, to Pauline White and Lonzy "Booty" Grigsby, Sr. He passed away on Friday, March 2, 2018, in Shreveport, LA. L.D. was a graduate of Bernice High School. He served in the Army National Guard for only a year, then in 1951 during The Korean War he joined the U.S. Air Force. After training at Randolph Field, TX, he was given orders to go to Korea. L.D. had been trained as a specialist in B-29 parts and worked on flight lines. He was sent back to California and after three years of active duty was released into the reserves for three years. After serving with USAF and moving back to Homer, LA, with his parents. L.D. went to welding school for 18 months and was certified as a code welder. He welded on the construction of several gasoline plants and some short pipeline jobs. In late 1958 L.D. joined the Louisiana State Police and attended the State Police Academy in Baton Rouge. He was then assigned to Troop G in Bossier City where he served for three years and six months. Then, was assigned as The Resident Trooper for Claiborne Parish where he was a member of the Tactical Unit serving special details throughout the state of Louisiana. L.D. worked the road for 17 years as a trooper and a sergeant. He was injured four times in the line of duty and at the time of his re-arraignment was the only trooper in Troop G to be awarded the State Police Purple Heart. In 1975 he was placed on medical retirement due to these injuries. In addition to being a graduate of the State Police Academy, L.D. went to numerous in-service classes at LSU and was a graduate of the LSU Law Enforcement Institute conducted in Baton Rouge. In 1955 L.D. married Peggy Jo Williams of Homer and had one daughter, Rhonda Gayle Grigsby. They never moved from Homer. L.D. was a member of the First Baptist Church of Homer, the American Legion and a charter member of the Claiborne Academy School. He is survived by his daughter, Rhonda Grigsby; son-in-law, Grady Andrews; a granddaughter, Codie Bryant; a great grandson, Raylon Dale Bryant; a great-granddaughter, Presley Jo; a sister, Dianne Grigsby Baldwin; two nieces, Lee Anne Baldwin Marston and Melissa Baldwin Garrett; a great nephew, "Ren" Tellis; a great niece, Layla Dianne Garrett; one brother-in-law, Cody Williams of Homer, LA; and his 14 year old Boston Terrier, Rastus. L.D. lost his wife of 49 years, Peggy Jo in 2005 due to a heart condition. After a recovery period, he went back to work part time wielding in the oil field. For friends considering memorials honoring L.D., his family suggests St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
