Lt. Col. Henry J. Hank Markiel, Ret.

SHREVEPORT, LA - A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. John Berchmans Cathedral in St. Michael the Archangel Chapel, 939 Jordan Street in Shreveport at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, June 14, 2014. Interment will follow at Forest Park West Cemetery, where he will rest next to his wife of 60 years, A. Ruth Markiel. Visitation will be held at the Rose-Neath Funeral Home, 1815 Marshall St, Shreveport, LA from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday, June 13, 2014. Henry Markiel (Hank) passed away peacefully June 8, 2014 at the age of 94. Hank is preceded in death by his loving wife, A. Ruth Markiel, his parents, Henry and Angeline Markiel, sisters, Irene Ballard and Alice van der Meulen and brother, Raymond Markiel. He is survived by his five children John Markiel, Janet Walker, Sally Hunt, George Markiel, and Mary Perkins, as well as his sister Helen Bryner. He was also the proud grandfather of many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Hank was born in Buffalo, New York, May 8, 1920 and moved to Jamestown, NY at an early age. After graduating from Jamestown High School, class of 1939 with letters in band for coronet, he felt the call to military service. After graduating sixth in his class with a flight school scholarship Hank was accepted as a military cadet. He married Anna Ruth Classon from nearby Frewsburg. He was a World War II veteran serving our country for 27 years in the United States Air Force, achieving the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. As a WW II pilot he was based in India and flew the first leg of the "Hump" supply chain. In 1947, Hank was transferred to the Strategic Air Command serving as a pilot and aircraft maintenance commander. After retirement he built a successful career in management placement. Henry was a master DIY-er and was always helping someone. He enjoyed puttering around the house and gardening and was an avid bowler and golfer, even making that elusive \"hole-in-one\". He was blessed with many dear friends. Donations may be made in his memory to Wounded Warriors Project.
