Funeral services for Lt. Col. John M. Mitchell, age 76 will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday September 26, 2016 at St. Michael The Archangel Chapel, 939 Jordan Street inside St. John Berchmans' in Shreveport, LA. Officiating the service will be Father Peter Mangum. Interment will be held at 12 Noon at Northwest Louisiana Veterans Cemetery, 7970 Mike Clark Road, Keithville, LA. Visitation will be Sunday, September 26, 2016 from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at Rose-Neath Funeral Home, Southside, 2500 Southside Drive, Shreveport, LA.
Lt.. Col. Mitchell was born in Brookings, South Dakota on December 29, 1939 to William Gerald & Mary Josephine Mitchell. Jack passed away peacefully on Friday September 23, 2016 at the Veterans' home in Bossier City, Louisiana.
Jack served proudly in the US Army for 20 years. During his service he was awarded both the Bronze Star with Valor and Combat Infantry Badge. After retiring he was the SAI of the Junior ROTC at Byrd High School. He was inducted into the C. E. Byrd Hall of Fame in 2011.
His parents and twin sister, Patricia McCormick, preceded him in death. Jack was a loving husband, brother, father, and grandpa and will be greatly missed. Left to cherish his memories are his wife of 51 years, Patricia Mitchell, and their 3 daughters, Jacqueline Tucker of Louisville, Kentucky, Karen Botzong wife of Dennis Botzong of Shreveport, Louisiana, and Mary Ann Shilling wife of Aaron Shilling of Collierville, TN. He is also survived by his grandchildren Brandon Tucker, Jordan & Ryan Botzong, and Roman and Adeline Shilling. His brother Dennis Mitchell and wife Mary, and sister Mary Kay Sones also survive him with numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers are from the East Shreveport Rotary Club. Honorary pallbearers will be his brothers-in-law Ronald Bumba and Alan Bumba. Honorary escorts are members of the C. E. Byrd JROTC.
All who met Jack knew he was an avid fan of the South Dakota State "Jack Rabbits" where he received his undergraduate degree. He received his master's degree at the University of Miami and loved cheering for the Hurricanes. Also his enthusiasm for Indy Car racing, Mudbug Hockey, and Byrd High School was contagious.
