LOGANSPORT, LA - Memorial Services honoring the life of Mrs. Peggy Garland, age 98, of Shreveport, La, will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 25, 2015 at First United Methodist Church of Logansport. The family will receive friends for visitation at 10:00 a.m. prior to the service, in the church sanctuary. Officiating will be Rev. Gloria Youngblood and Rev. Conrad Edwards.
Mabel Crawford "Peggy" Moseley was born July 24, 1916 in Keatchie, LA to Mabel Leigh Gatlin Moseley and John Towns Moseley. In early childhood, she renamed herself "Peggy", after one of her dolls and the name stuck. Growing up in Keatchie, she attended school under her father's watchful eye as her teacher and principal. She graduated from Louisiana Tech University in 1937, with a degree in Home Economics. While at Tech, she was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority. After graduation, she taught Home Economics until she married. Peggy married Dr. William John Garland on March 3, 1939. The Garland's made their home in Logansport, LA, where Peggy served as office manager for her husband's medical practice until his retirement in 1976. The Garlands' were longtime members of the First United Methodist Church of Logansport. Peggy was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution; Methodist Women's Missionary Society and taught Sunday school for many years. She enjoyed traveling and looked forward to visiting her son, Bill, and his family in northern Arkansas, especially in the fall. She and W.J. enjoyed fishing in their small pond near the Hunter community. She was an avid duplicate bridge player and was a member of the Shreveport Bridge Association. She played at the level of double master. In 1998, Peggy and W.J. moved to Live Oak Retirement Community in Shreveport, LA. For years, she enjoyed a variety of activities and good friends at Live Oak.
Peggy was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sons, Dr. William John Garland, Jr., and Thomas David Garland; and brothers, Jack Moseley and Tom Moseley.
She survived by daughter, Nancy Garland Morgan and husband Bill of Choudrant; daughter-in-law, Judy Horn Garland of Fayetteville, AR; five grandchildren, William Courtney Garland and wife, Susan, of Harrison, AR, Brete Ballard Garland and wife, Camille, David Grant Garland of Henry Blake Garland, all of Fayetteville, AR and Taylor Morgan Jackson and husband, Ladd, of Choudrant; great-grandchildren, William Logan Garland, Leigh Caroline Little, Ella Claire Garland, Zachary Neil Jackson and Conly Sinclair Jackson; nieces, Doris Virginia Stewart, Vickie Lee, Cherrie Robinson and nephew, Porter Dowling. She is also survived numerous cousins and friends.
Thank you to extended family members and friends who have helped with Peggy's care, Doris Virginia Stewart, Billy and Cathy McClelland, Cherrie Robinson, Mel Phillips, Jeannie Border, Caldwin and Gaye Cranor, Greg and Penny Booth and many friends and staff at The Oaks.
Thanks to The Oaks of Louisiana for providing a home away from home for 27 years and Hospice of Shreveport-Bossier for providing compassionate in-home care.
Special thanks to wonderful sitters Cathy Ware, Jennifer Guice, Joyce Taylor, L'Chaka Jackson, Madaline Campo, Uradel Reliford and Gladys Walker. They incredible care they provided allowed Peggy to stay in her home, where she was most comfortable. These women are more than sitters; they treated Peggy with love and dignity providing attention to every detail. Honorary pallbearers will be Courtney Garland, Brete Garland, Grant Garland, Blake Garland, Logan Garland and Ladd Jackson.
