WEST MONROE, LA: Funeral services were held for Mr. Marion Dale Baxter, 88 at Westside Baptist Church, 1431 Camp Avenue in Haynesville, LA on Monday, March 13, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Jeffrey L. Derrick, officiating. Interment followed at Hurricane Cemetery near Athens, LA. The family received friends at the church on Sunday, from 5-8 p.m. Mr. Baxter was born January 8, 1929 in Haynesville, LA to Julius H. and Joseph Alma Hargis Baxter. He entered into rest Friday, March 10, 2017 at his residence in West Monroe, LA. Mr. Baxter served in the US Army Air Corp and was a truck driver for Amoco. He also worked as a dispatcher for Bienville Parish Sheriff's Department and was a volunteer fireman. Mr. Baxter was preceded in death by his parents; step-father, Ernest Ethan Edwards; his first wife, Carrie Lee Baxter; a stepson, Charles R. Shaffer; 3 sisters, Lee Barton, Dorothy Jean Sikes and Linda Silvis; a brother Ernest L. Edwards; and daughter-in-law, Barbara Lynn Mills. He is survived by his second wife, Melvis Wynn Mills Baxter; 4 stepsons, James E. Shaffer, Hayward N. Shaffer, John Henry Mills and wife Diane and Otis Dewayne Mills; 2 stepdaughters,Katherine Ann Ward and husband Manuel and Tammie D. McCann and husband Gary; 3 sisters, Connie Lynn Woods and husband Ronny, Ethel Mynell Lee and husband Jesse and Madge Bevill and Husband Wyatt; brother, William J. Baxter; a brother-in-law, Larry Silvis and wife Reba; numerous step grandchildren, great grandchildren and great, great grandchildren; along with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Pallbearers were Ragan McCann, Steven Ward, Michael Ward, Michael Shayne Ward, O'Neil Fox, Guy Silvis, Christopher Silvis and Dennis Silvis. Honorary pallbearers were the men of Westside Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers honoring Mr. Baxter, his family suggests the Westside Baptist Church or St. Jude Children's Hospital.
