HOMER, LA: Funeral services were held for Marjorie "Margie" Monk Michael, 86, at St. Margaret's Catholic Church in Homer on Saturday, September 26, 2015 at 1:30 p.m. Interment followed at Arlington cemetery. Visitation was held on Saturday from 12:30 p.m. until 1:30 p.m. at St. Margaret's. Mrs. Michael was born October 17, 1928 in Colquitt, LA to William Wood and Sarah Elizabeth Christian Monk. She entered into rest September 22, 2015.
After completing her nursing degree at Centenary College in Shreveport, Mrs. Michael began her nursing career at Homer Memorial Hospital. In order to have more time her true calling, raising her many children, she became the school nurse for the Homer public school system. After her children were older, she continued her nursing career at the Claiborne Parish Health Unit and Claiborne Home Health.
Mrs. Michael served her community through her volunteer efforts at Clothes, Etc. Thrift Shop, as a Red Stripe Lady at the Homer Hospital, and as a member of the Homer and Athens Garden Clubs. She enjoyed time with the Red Hat ladies group, Ladies Day card club, and the NAAGQ.
She was preceded in death by her husband Joe Michael, 2 daughters: Rebecca Michael Craig and Mary Jane Michael, her parents, 4 sisters: Allyne Monk Austin, Rebecca Monk Bond, Shirley Monk Piatt, and Gloria Monk Ham, and 3 brothers, Robert "Bob" Monk, Samuel "Bo" Monk, and John William Monk.
Mrs. Michael is survived by her 3 sons: Joe Ellis Michael and wife Venetia, David Michael and wife Caroline, and Kevin Michael and wife Debbie, 2 daughters: Patricia Michael Schenck and husband Phil and April Michael Hand and husband Jimmy, 4 grandchildren: Will Michael and wife Kristen, Carrie Michael Bubenzer and husband Christian, Ellis Michael and Jonas Michael, 2 great grandchildren: Evan Bubenzer and Emmy Michael, and 1 sister, Sarah Jane Monk Foster.
Pallbearers were her sons and grandsons: Joe Ellis Michael, David Michael, Kevin Michael, Johnny Craig, Jimmy Hand, Phil Schenck, Will Michael, Ellis Michael, Jonas Michael, and Christian Bubenzer. Honorary pallbearers will be all the members of the NAAGQ.
The family would like to extend special thanks to the caregivers who assisted Mrs. Michael including the entire staffs of Regional Hospice, Claiborne Memorial Medical Center, Claiborne Rehabilitation / Louisiana Specialty Care, the Haynes Clinic, and Southern Ingenuity; Merita Walker; and especially Dr. Scott Haynes.
