Martha Lynne Walker Wetzig

Martha Lynne Walker Wetzig, born January 17, 1947, passed away on October 30, 2015, in Grapevine, Texas. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, November 3, 2015, at 2:00 p.m. at West Chapel, First Baptist Church, Minden, Louisiana. Graveside services will be held at Gardens of Memory Cemetery in Minden immediately following the service. Presiding will be Rev. Bill Crider of Minden, assisted by Martha's cousin, Rolle Walker of St. Louis, Missouri. Visitation will be held at Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Minden, Louisiana on Monday, November 2, from 5:00 p.m .to 7:00 p.m. Martha is preceded in death by her husband, Donald Alan Wetzig of Dallas, Texas, and her parents, Frances Thomas and Andrew Newton Walker of Minden. She is survived by two children: Lindsey Alan Wetzig, his wife April, of Keller; and Leah Catherine Wetzig of Dallas. Grandchildren include: Andrew James Wetzig, Jack Ryan Wetzig and Ben Alan Wetzig. She also is survived by a sister, Ellen Elizabeth (Libby) Walker Cleveland and husband Gary of Berthoud, Colorado, and Tommy Walker and wife Cindy of Minden, LA. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive her. Martha was selected as an All-State band member while at Minden High School and was a member of the Teen Trebles ensemble and TeenTone Choir of First Baptist Church, Minden. She graduated from Minden High School in 1965 as salutatorian of her class. Martha then went on to graduate with honors from Baylor University in 1969 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in elementary education. Martha was the recipient of the Ross Perot Education Award for Excellence upon graduation. She earned a Masters degree in Education from Southern Methodist University in 1974. She married Donald Alan Wetzig in 1973. Martha taught in the Dallas area public schools for over 20 years and was named Teacher of the Year in Midlothian School District. She and her two children, Lindsey and Leah, moved to Minden in 1991 where she was an active member of First Baptist Church, Minden. Martha enjoyed singing in the First Baptist Minden choir and using her teaching gifts as a 4th grade Sunday school teacher for several years until 2008 when she moved to Dallas. Martha was known for her gentle spirit, friendly nature, and willingness to serve others. In lieu of flowers, a memorial may be made to the Martha L. Walker Wetzig and Donald A. Wetzig Scholarship Fund at Baylor University. Donations may be mailed to One Bear Place #97050, Waco, TX 76798-7050 or online by visiting www.baylor.edu/give and then searching for "Martha L. Walker Wetzig." Pallbearers will include: Winston Walker, Chris Walker, Craig Walker, Robert McKillips, Dr. Fred Cabaniss, Jack Byrd, Wayne Orr, and Howard Doughty.
