Maxine Whitney Moss was born on August 25, 1933 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. She and her sister Phyllis were raised on their family’s dairy farm in Perry, Ok. Maxine later moved to Shreveport, Louisiana where she worked for Sue Peyton’s, a ladies apparel and bridal shop in downtown Shreveport for many years. She also sold Sarah Coventry jewelry. She was fashionable and stylish and a true beauty. She met the love of her life, Frank Moss, and they married and welcomed their only child, Albin Moss, in 1963.
Maxine was a social butterfly with a heart for philanthropy. She was a member of the “Order of the Eastern Star”, where she held the esteemed position of “Worthy Matron” (presiding officer) on multiple occasions. She was also a member of “The Daughters of the Nile”, where she reigned as Queen in 1991. The family would like to extend their gratitude to her wonderful, life-long friends in these organizations for their devotion and kindness to her over the years.
Maxine never met a stranger. She was the official neighborhood welcoming ambassador for NewCastle Subdivision, greeting all newcomers with a smile and a gift basket. She loved her neighbors dearly, both on Midway and in NewCastle. Even at age 90 she had an uncanny ability to recall names, places and special memories of her days there. She cherished her “birthday lunch bunch” ladies from NewCastle in particular. Maxine was quite a character and left an impression on everyone that she encountered. She was a favorite amongst her caretakers, known for her quick wit, honest opinions and mental acuity.
A graveside service honoring the life of Maxine will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 5, 2024 located at Forest Park East Cemetery, 3700 St Vincent Ave in Shreveport. Officiating the service will be Reverend Willis Dear.
Maxine Moss is preceded in death by her husband, Frank Moss Jr. She is survived by her son, Albin Moss; her sister, Phyllis Price; grandsons, Luke Moss, Christopher Moss, and Thomas Legg; and great-grandchildren Eli, Gracelynn, Emma and Colton. Also a very beloved niece, Patti Golden Fellows, who meant the world to her. Special thanks to the pastors and members of Christ Methodist Church, her friends, neighbors and all who loved her. She loved you very much. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Shriner’s Hospital or the charity of your choice.
