Melva was born on April 6, 1940, in Shreveport, Louisiana to James Malvin and Geneva Speights and passed away on Sunday, February 25, 2024.

After graduating from Fair Park High School in 1958, Melva went to work for Lee Tractor where she met her husband of 62 years, Max. Melva served as the secretary for the Sheet Metal Workers Union 361. After retiring to Toledo Bend, Melva became a successful Independent Avon Sales Representative, earning top honors within the company to include President’s Club, Honor Society, and Rose Circle. She was also a proud member of the Hot Wells Volunteer Fire Department in Sabine Parish. She was an avid reader, enjoyed painting, and was competitive by nature. She loved playing games, cards, working puzzles, and she spared no one for the thrill of the win. She taught her daughters and grandchildren how to embrace ambition and independence.

Melva is preceded in death by her parents, James Malvin and Geneva Speights; husband, Max Olin Sasser; brother, Robert Speights; and sister, Mary Anita Jimmerson. Left to cherish her memory is her sister, Yvonne Young; her daughters, Stacy Strange (Doug Cox) and Vickie Colvin; three grandchildren, Madison Heard, Courtney Colvin Devora and husband, Marc Anthony Devora, and Travis Colvin; great-granddaughter, Langlea Skye Morgan; and numerous nieces, nephews and other extended family members and friends.

The family would like to express special thanks to Ronald and the ER and CCU staff at Christus Highland Hospital.

In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorials may be made to the Shriners Hospital, 3100 Samford Avenue, Shreveport, Louisiana 71103.
