Michael Toney Johnson went home to meet his Lord and Savior on July 8 at his home in Homer, LA. His devoted wife of 54 years, Betty Jean Johnson, was by his side. He was born on March 21, 1948, to Miriam Bateman Johnson and Andrew Pittman Johnson in Minden, LA. He was a graduate of Homer High School, class of 1966. He attended Louisiana Tech University for 2 years then transferred to LSU in Baton Rouge, where he obtained a business degree.
Toney and Jean were married in 1969 and just celebrated their fifty-fourth wedding anniversary in February. They lived in Baton Rouge for 7 years where Toney worked at LA National Bank. After moving to Homer, Toney worked as an agent for Arthur DeLoach Real Estate in Minden, before opening his own Real Estate/Appraisal business. He was joined later by his friend, Jimmy Tuggle, who worked for him as an Agent. He also trained Terry Peterson and Jonathan McMurray to be appraisers. Toney has worked as a Broker/Appraiser for the past 47 years.
Toney was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Patricia. He is survived by his siblings, Fred Johnson and wife, Elaine, of Amite, LA; Beth Carter and husband, David, of Doyline, LA; and Pat Johnson and wife, Lety, of Bryan TX. He is also survived by his two children, Brent Johnson and wife, Kristy, of Frisco, TX; and Dana Johnson Williams and husband, Greg, of Longview, TX. Jean and Toney are also the proud grandparents of five grandchildren, Chloe, and Alexander Johnson; and Madelyn, Landon, and Cameron Williams.
Toney was a deacon and longtime member of First Baptist Church of Homer. He had a servant’s heart and worked tirelessly to help countless members of the community. The family would like to thank his physicians, Dr. Cliff Salmon, and Camille Wise; and his favorite nurses and friends, Valerie Tuggle, and Erin White. We sincerely appreciate the valiant efforts of the Firefighters, EMS, and Policemen who responded and offered their support and comfort.
Services will be held at First Baptist Church in Homer, LA on Tuesday, July 11. Visitation is at 10 AM, the funeral service will begin at 11 AM with a graveside service at Arlington Cemetery immediately after. Pastor Brian Thurman will be officiating. The family asks that donations, in lieu of flowers, be made to The Gideons International or to First Baptist Church of Homer, LA.
