Michael Phillip Johnston, 73, departed this life on Friday, July 19, 2024, in the faith and knowledge of his Lord Jesus Christ. Mike was born on June 10, 1951, in Springhill, Webster Parish, Louisiana, the son of Daniel A. Johnston and Thelma Burton Johnston.
He was a resident of Shreveport, Louisiana, for many years. Mike was married in 1969 in New York City to Elizabeth Bernstein Johnston, and they had one child, John Michael Johnston, born in 1970. Both Elizabeth and John Michael tragically died in a traffic accident in 1972. Afterwards, Mike moved to Shreveport where he eventually met Susan Embrey Johnston whom he married on October 20, 1979. Mike and Susan were happily married until her death on October 2, 2017. Mike was the owner of a flower shop for many years and loved the joy and comfort that flowers brought to his customers and their loved ones. After retiring from the floral business, Mike became a Funeral Director at Kilpatrick’s Rose-Neath Funeral Home, Marshall Street, where he served with dignity and compassion for seven years until his retirement to care for his beloved wife, Susan. Mike and Susan were members of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Shreveport, Louisiana, for many years. Mike Johnston was a gentle, humble Christian man who was everyone’s friend – at the flower shop, at the funeral home, in the neighborhood and finally at the nursing home where he spent his last two years.
The service for Mike Johnston will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 275 Southfield Road, Shreveport, Louisiana, on Thursday, August 1, 2024, at 11:00 a.m., with The Reverend Michael Cannon officiating. A graveside service will be held at Springhill Cemetery in Springhill, Louisiana at 2:00 p.m.
Pallbearers will be Steve Becker, Levi Dew, Richard Hexter, David Langley and Ronald Smith. Honorary pallbearers will be Joel Mick and Saundra Mick.
The friends of Mike Johnston are grateful for the skillful and compassionate care provided to him by the doctors, nurses and other caregivers at Heritage Manor Stratmore, Willis-Knighton Pierremont and Lifepath Hospice.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 275 Southfield Road Shreveport, Louisiana, 71105 or the charity of the donor’s choice.
