Myrna Louise Sanford

Myrna Louise (Mims) Sanford of Shreveport was born on December 5, 1928 in Wichita Falls, Texas. Her family moved to Shreveport while she was in high school, where she met Leo Sanford. Their story started in 1949, he a Fair Park football player and she a soda jerk. On their first real date he told her he was going to marry her, and she told him he was crazy. While she spent the next sixty eight years admitting he was right, she'd also tell you he was still crazy. Through those years Myrna and Leo had four kids, ten grandchildren, and nineteen great-grandchildren. They drove a camper across the country, cruised to Alaska, toured London, and followed their beloved Louisiana Tech Bulldog football team from Ruston to Honolulu. Myrna would tell you the most important details of those years, though, were in the backyard parties they held, graduations and weddings they attended, and pots of coffee they shared. Their love story was shared by everyone they knew, even strangers who watched them dance at any party with a band. She could communicate a whole conversation with just a look and make you feel loved with the way she took your face in her hands before she hugged you. Stories and facts don't do her justice; there was simply no one like Myrna. She was strong-willed, exceptionally beautiful, fiercely loyal, and effortlessly the best wife, mother, grandmother, and friend to us all.
Leo was by her side through eight years of treatment for ovarian cancer, and her daughters continued her legacy of love through their exceptional care. She won her battle and was welcomed into His heavenly arms on Saturday, March 31, with her family at her side. She is preceded in death by her parents, Roy Lester Mims and Nettie Harkness Mims. She is survived by the love of her life and husband of sixty eight years, Leo Sanford, sister Annette Murray of Spring, TX, sons Steve Sanford (Denise) of Lake Charles and Stan (Rhonda) Sanford of Shreveport, daughters Sally Joiner (Curt) of Shreveport and Sheri Franklin (Bobby) of Lake Charles, and their families. The list of lifelong friends is too numerous to mention by name, but their experiences tailgating, traveling, and sharing meals make this love story complete.
Family and friends are invited to attend visitation on Sunday, April 1, from 4-6pm and Monday at 11am at Rose-Neath South Funeral Home and the memorial service at Rose-Neath Southside Chapel on Monday, April 2, at 12pm. Interment will follow at Forest Park West Cemetery. Pallbearers are her grandsons Clint Sanford, Cris Sanford, Joseph Leo Sanford, Greg Smith, Michael Guyton, Cody Young, Cade Durio, Collin Bantle, and Jonathon Clark. Honorary pallbearers are NAAGQ members Red Aucoin, Melvin Barney, Bobby Aillet, Carrell Dowies, Red Smith, and longtime business partner Don Johnson. In lieu of flowers please make donations to St. Jude's Children's Hospital or the Northwest Louisiana Food Bank.
