SHREVEPORT, LA- Funeral services for Nelwyn Craighead Goodman, 93, will be held 10:00 a.m. Friday, August 1, 2014 at First Presbyterian Church. Officiating will be Rev. Dr. Chris Currie. Interment will follow in Forest Park West Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Thursday, July 31, 2014 at Rose-Neath's Southside Funeral Home, 2500 Southside Drive.
Nelwyn was born on December 26, 1920 in Athens, LA to James Floyd and Lela Acklen Craighead and passed away on July 24, 2014. She graduated from Jonesboro-Hodge High School in 1937 and from Louisiana Tech in 1941with a degree in Business Administration with a permanent teacher's certificate. She moved to Tulsa, OK and worked at Douglas Aircraft during the war. She took private flying lessons with the intensions of joining the Women's Ferry Command and received a flying license at the war ended. She moved back to Lake Charles with her family then marrying Marvin Goodman in 1947 and moving to Shreveport where she raised two sons, when they began school she went to work with Shelby Jackson, Superintendent of the State of Louisiana Department of Education in the field of Vocational Rehabilitation of handicapped adults. She continued her education at Centenary College, LSUS and Texas State University. She worked as a teacher, counselor and administrator for the Vocational Rehabilitation of Handicapped Adult of Caddo Parish until her retirement. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Louisiana Retired Teachers Association and a life member of National Rehabilitation Association. She enjoyed gardening, painting and scrapbooking.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, Marvin F. Goodman, Sr.; son, Marvin F. Goodman, Jr. and brother, James Loyd Craighead; sisters, Erma Poe and husband, Reginald, Louvada Davis and husband, Lester, Lena Moon and husband, Joe, Lorae Owens and husband, Eldridge and Ora Jane Wise and husband, Leslie. Left to cherish her memory are son, David Floyd Goodman; grandchildren, Charles Patrick Goodman, Donnie Ray Goodman and wife, Brenda, Lela Goodman Goldwair and husband William; great-grandchildren, Jeremiah Goldwair, Jayla Goldwair, Carmen Goldwair, Daniel Goldwair, and Maddox Goodman; numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 900 Jordan Street Shreveport, LA., 71101.
