SHREVEPORT, LA - Norma Smart Baird (Ms. Norma to many of her friends) was born February 8, 1935 in Victoria, Texas to Edna Marie Smart and William Franklin Smart. At the age of 10, due to her mothers' illness, she and her brother were taken to her fathers, sisters, and brother-in-law to live. Mary Emma, Louis King and Effie Smart raised them as her own.
She was preceded in death by her parents and aunts and uncle.
A celebration of life will be held 10:00 a.m. Monday, December 1, 2014 at Rose-Neath's Southside Chapel. Interment will follow at Forest Park West Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Sunday, November 30, 2014 at the funeral home.
Norma came to Shreveport in 1955 after graduating from LA Tech to begin a teaching career of 32 years in Caddo Parish. She loved teaching in the lower elementary grades, especially first grade. After her first 3 years of teaching, she resigned and joined the staff of First United Methodist Church as directors of the Junior High Department. She had always wanted to do youth work and this was a fulfillment of a dream. She was instrumental in organizing the first single adult class at First Methodist and it was at one of their activities that she met her future husband, Tommy. They married July 30, 1961. They loved doing things together, fishing, hunting, and camping. They were active in the community, working in non-profit organizations that gave back to the community. The ArkLaTex Gun Collectors, BASS LIFE Associations, and North LA Fly Fishers. Norma was a help mate in every sense of the word and loved her family dearly. She was a member of First United Methodist Church for over 50 years. She volunteered in the Youth Department and took many trips with them to Colorado, Wyoming, the Carolina's and Florida.
Norma loved to cook and feed people, their home was open to many, especially during the holidays. She would invite many friends who would not be able to be with their family at Thanksgiving and Christmas. She and Tom hosted many Christmas parties for the organizations that they worked with as well as a neighborhood party.
She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Thomas L Baird; one son, Thomas L. Baird, Jr. of Houston, TX; brother, Marvin L. King and wife Annette of West Monroe, LA; sister-in-law, Susan Stutson of Ruston, LA; brother-in-law, William "Bill" A. Baird and wife Sherrie of Shreveport; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Pallbearers will be Mike Murphy, Tony Alexander, Greg Strickland, Jonathan Murphy, David Glass, Ray Tabor, Happy Tyler, and Tom Viellon. Honorary pallbearers will be Bob Anderson, Cliff Burgess, and Joe Huddleston.
