Norma Broussard Waters

Norma Broussard Waters, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, Thursday, July 24, 2014. A memorial celebration will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, August 2, 2014 at Summer Grove United Methodist Church. Officiating will be Rev. Willis Dear. Norma was born November 11, 1940 in Lafayette, Louisiana to the late Joseph and Alma Broussard. She attended Milton grade school and Milton High School in Milton Louisiana. She also attended Southwestern Louisiana Industrial Institute. Norma married Jerry Darrell Waters in 1968; they had three children and would have celebrated 46 years of marriage on August 17, 2014. She went on to graduate from Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana with a Bachelors of Science in 1969. Norma worked for Texas Eastern and then went on to obtain her certification to teach school. Norma began teaching at St. John Berchmans Cathedral School in 1980. At St. Johns, Norma became a beloved teacher and friend to hundreds of students and teachers. Nearing the end of her career, when she was ready to retire, Norma's love for teaching was revived when she began working with the St. John Berchmans Science Olympiad. She, friends and colleagues Jo Cazes and Amy Simon brought Science Olympiad teams to Nationals 6 years in a row. Norma's legacy are her three children who loved and adored her until the end. She will be remembered by those who knew and loved her as a "Teacher, in school as well as in life, as a strong, independent, funny, and beautiful Cajun Lady". She could light up a room with her smile and brought a party where ever she went. Her favorite things were spending time with her family, especially her grandsons Mitchell and Matthew, traveling with her grandson Mitchell, her St. John Berchmans family and her friends at Summer Grove United Methodist Church where she was a member and Sunday school teacher. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Alma Broussard of Milton, LA; and brother Kenneth Broussard of Milton, LA. Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Jerry Darrell Waters; sons, Thomas Waters and wife, Melissa, and John Waters; daughter, Lizzy Waters Stewart and husband, Scott; grandchildren, Mitchell and Matthew Waters; and many family members and friends. She is also survived by her brother, Russell Broussard and wife, Nona Faye; sisters, Sylvia Formby and husband, Ralph and Rose Landry and husband, Vernon; sister-in-law, Patricia Broussard. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the St. John Berchmans Cathedral School Science Olympiad Team or the charity of your choice.
