December 1, 1976 – July 2, 2023
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Rachel Denise King (46) of Shreveport, Louisiana, on July 2, 2023, following a lengthy battle with cancer. She was a devoted wife and loving mother.
Rachel was born on December 1, 1976 in Shreveport, Louisiana, to William B. “Pete” and Alice Warren King. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Louisiana State University at Shreveport in 2001 and her Juris Doctorate from Southern University Law Center in Baton Rouge in 2004. After graduating law school, Rachel briefly worked as a law clerk for the First Judicial District Court. She then served as an Assistant City Prosecutor, Solo-Practitioner and Assistant District Attorney for Caddo Parish. From 2018 to present, Rachel worked with her father at King & King Law, LLC. She took great joy and pride in following in her father’s footsteps, and was excited to work with her father in the practice of law.
Rachel was very kind and compassionate and truly cared about people, especially children. She volunteered as a tutor at Arthur Circle Elementary School in Shreveport, and was a dedicated supporter of the Oakwood Home for Women, also in Shreveport. She frequently spoke with, and offered guidance to men and women with substance addictions. Rachel never gave up on someone in need.
Rachel enjoyed reading, traveling, and spending quality time with friends and family. She especially enjoyed the annual trips to South Padre Island, Texas. Her greatest joy, however, was being a mother.
Rachel is preceded in death by her mother, Alice Jean Warren King; maternal grandparents, Alva and Alma Warren; and paternal grandparents, Lamont and Lucille King. Those left to cherish her memory are her husband of 22 years, Richard Self; daughter, Audra Jean King-Self; father, William B. “Pete” King; stepmother, Christine King; sisters Jill King, Jena Martino (Thony), and Brande Miller; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, and friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Shriners Childrens Hospital or Oakwood Home for Women, both in Shreveport.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 8, 2023, at Kilpatrick’s Rose-Neath Funeral Home, 1815 Marshall Street, Shreveport, Louisiana. Visitation will be held from 1pm to 2pm, with a memorial service to follow.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Tyler Lash, Brandon, Meagan, as well as the nurses and staff of the Willis Knighton Cancer Center for their tireless medical care, as well as Christie, Monica, Lucy, and Judy of Willis Knighton Hospice for their loving and compassionate care. The family would like to express its appreciation to the wonderful staff of Saint Joseph’s Carpenter House for the care and comfort they provided. A special note of gratitude is wished for Seminarian Austin Young of Saint Joseph’s Catholic Church for his frequent visits, support, and prayers. The family would also like to acknowledge the incredible support received from the administrative staff, teachers, and families of the Montessori School for Shreveport, especially Mrs. Angie Day.
