R.D. "Pete" Barnes, 89, died peacefully at his home in Blanchard, Louisiana on October 23, 2017 following a lengthy illness. Funeral services will be held Friday, October 27, 2017, at 2 p.m. at Rose-Neath Funeral Home, 1815 Marshall Street in Shreveport, LA, with Bro. Roy D. Strother of Mooringsport Baptist Church and Bro. Jim Gstohl officiating. Interment will follow in Memorial Gardens North in Blanchard, LA. The family will receive friends at the Rose-Neath Chapel from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m.
R.D. was born September 5, 1928 in Marthaville, Louisiana and was a member of Mooringsport Baptist Church. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy during WWII. He retired from the supermarket business following a 36-year career during which time he climbed his way from a package boy to the supervisor of several supermarkets in the A & P and Bestyet food store chains. He loved the grocery business and the people with whom he worked.
R.D. was a devoted husband to the love of his life, Joyce, and he was always there to lend a helping hand to his children and grandchildren. He loved nature, children, animals, and all of life's living things. He was an outdoorsman who loved gardening, fishing on Caddo Lake, and shooting archery with his sons. His greatest joy, however, was being able to fulfill his lifelong dream of being a cowboy while living on the Circle B Ranch.
R.D. was preceded in death by his parents: Durward and Beatrice Barnes, one daughter, Debra Kay Pharr, two sisters, Audrey Bateman Miller and Barbara Hutchinson, and two brothers Gene Barnes and Cecil Barnes.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Joyce Barnes; three sons: Stuart Barnes (Beth), Ricky Pharr (Vickie), Tom Barnes (Christie); two daughters: Glenda Clary and Karen Pharr; two sisters: Dixie Upchurch and Peggy West (Tom); two brothers: Terry Barnes and Robert Barnes (Pat); and one sister-in-law, Gail Barnes; eight grandchildren: Ashley Reed (Phillip), Michael Barnes, Stephanie Clary, Cynthia Clary, Ricky Pharr, Jr., Brett Pharr, Ryland Barnes, and Mia Troquille; five great-grandchildren: Bryce, A.J., Dakota, Ryder and Vivian.
Honoring Pete as pallbearers will be Ricky Pharr, Jr., Brett Pharr, Ryland Barnes, Phillip Reed, Jack Davis, and Larry Spanhanks.
The family would like to thank his nurse Kathy and the wonderful staff at Amedisys Hospice. A special thanks to his caregivers Kylie Entrekin, Toni Jackson, and to his daughter Karen Pharr for all the love, sacrifices, care, and support given not only to her father during his illness, but for lovingly seeing her mother through as well.
