Shreveport, La - On December 29, 2014, God wrote the final words into the story of the life of Rene DeHondt. At the age of 78, our dad passed from this life into the presence of His Savior after a long, well-fought battle with cancer. His last words to so many only encompassed how he lived: "I love you." He leaves a beautiful legacy of love to his wife, Carolyn; and their three children, Danny and his wife, Jodi of Allen, Texas; Chris, and Shannon and her husband, Paul; his six grandchildren, Sarah, Paul, Camila, Anna Beth, Abigail, and Elijah (He was born on Rene's birthday, February 4, 2013).
Rene was married to Carolyn, the love of his life, for 53 years. He spent his life as a hard-working, devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. He always found ways to stay fit, whether by lifting weights, jogging, or just working hard at everything he attempted. He managed to pass down that same love of fitness to his children and grandchildren as well. He didn't meet the activities in which his children were involved merely as a spectator, but sought to participate in any ways he could in all that involved them. Countless football games, track meets, baseball games...he was there, either as the coach or the cheerleader! One of his passions later in his life was his participation in the frequent "Bored" Meetings in the Family Life Center at Calvary Baptist Church. Because of his loving faith, he also enjoyed attending Bobby Covington's bible study. Pop, as we most often referred to him, will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Pallbearers will be Cecil Snider, David Snider, David DeHondt, Scott Ryan, Ray Brown, Bill Hoolahan, Gene Ash, Butch Bunch, George Webb, Jim Plumb, Tommy Meredith, Charlie Hicks, Ernie Fegley. Honorary pallbearers include Bobby Covington, Jim Harris, A.J. Strahan, Kevin Cross and the members of "The Bored Meeting."
Visitation will be held Friday, January 2 at 9:30 a.m. - 10:45 a.m. at Calvary Baptist Church. Services to honor his life will be held Friday, January 2, 2015 at 11 a.m. at Calvary Baptist Church. Officiating the service will be Rev. Eddie DeHondt and Rev. Paul Flowers. Interment will follow at Forest Park West.
