Richard Roy Dancy, 66, of Shreveport, Louisiana, passed away on Monday, March 13, 2023 from sepsis, after a 10-year-long struggle with multiple sclerosis.
Richard, or Dicky, was born on November 23, 1956, to Roxy and Louise Dancy in Shreveport, Louisiana. He graduated from Woodlawn High School in 1974. That's where he met his wife, Monica, to whom he was devotedly married for 47 years.
Dicky was an eternal optimist known for his joviality, irreverence, and exuberance. He smiled big and laughed loud. A legendary talker, his long-form storytelling would last until the end of the party, and stretch into the car ride home. No topic was off limits. Dicky's volubility was matched only by his curiosity about subjects ranging from rock music to civil war geography, political theory, and physics. A romantic, he explored the world through books, and possessed a deep appreciation for art and lyricism.
Dicky was unusually intelligent, an auto-didact who in his lifetime transformed from a shy child to a self-reliant businessman. His true talent, though, was inspiring positivity and confidence in others. That talent he carried into his work as the owner of Account Control Bureau (est. 1994) and into his successful stints as a football and softball coach, as a debate dad, as a racecar driver and competition director, and as an advocate for others burdened with MS.
Above all else, Dicky was a very fun, excited, and generous husband and father. Living with him was a grand adventure. In his later years, he was known as "Popper" to his grandkids, and to the dozens of friends and neighborhood children that were drawn to his playful and welcoming spirit.
Richard was preceded in death by his daughter Amy Dancy; his mother, Louise Dancy; and his father, Roxy Dancy. He is survived by his loving wife, Monica Dancy; daughter, Heather Fatherree and husband, Lee, of Shreveport, LA; son, Geoff Dancy and wife, Menaka Philips, of Toronto, Ontario; and four grandchildren, Gracie and Alexander Fatherree, and Jai and Rami Philips Dancy. He is also survived by his brother, Roxy Dancy and wife, Stacey; his sister, Debbie Long and husband, Mike; in addition to numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Family and friends are welcome to attend a visitation, which will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Rose-Neath Funeral Home, 1815 Marshall St., Shreveport, Louisiana on Thursday, March 16, 2023. The memorial service will be held at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Stonewall, Louisiana, at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, March 17, 2023. Officiating the service will be Richard's nephew, Monsignor Matthew Tyler Long.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations may be made to New Horizons Independent Living Center, an organization Richard felt strongly about (https://nhilc.org/).
