Funeral Service for Robert Kirk Mayo will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, June 15, 2018, at First Baptist Church Frost Chapel. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Rose-Neath Marshall Street on Thursday, June 14, 2018. Robert Kirk Mayo was born on October 4, 1926 in Shreveport, Louisiana to Inez Kirk and William Thomas Mayo. He died peacefully on June 12, 2018. He graduated from CE Byrd High School in 1942 followed by a year at Sewanee Military Academy. He also graduated from Centenary College and Tulane University Law School. While at Centenary he pledged Kappa Alpha Order. Mr. Mayo served in the United States Army during World War II where he was stationed in the Philippines and Occupied Japan. During the Korean conflict he served in the Pentagon in the JAG. It was in Washington DC where he met Betty Apple of Georgia whom he married in 1954. They returned to Shreveport where Mr. Mayo began practicing law. They had two daughters, Christi and Elaine. Mr. Mayo was a member of First Baptist Church where he served on the Board of Directors and on the church school board of Trustees. He taught in the Triple Triangle Sunday School class for 30 years. He was also a member of the Shreveport Bar Association and was elected president in 1983. He held membership in the Louisiana and American Bar associations as well. Mr. Mayo was a member of the American Legion and served as Vice-Commander, and the 40&8 Society where he became Chef de Gare. Mr. Mayo served on the committee that drafted the Shreveport City Charter which became effective in 1978. Mr. Mayo practiced law until he retired at 85, ending his career as a partner in Coleman and Mayo. Mr. Mayo is survived by his wife Betty, his children, Christi and her husband Pope Oden and Elaine and her husband, Bruce Poynter; and his grandchildren Matthew Oden and Meredith Oden, Bennett Poynter and his wife Aimee, and Seth Poynter. His family would like to thank and acknowledge Mr. Mayo's two "earth angels", Donnie Walpool and Robert Wilson for their steadfast care and devotion. We are also grateful for the staff at Montclair Assisted Living, especially Jasmine Fortner, LaShone Burks, Ella Allums, Sherry Henderson, Willie Mae Jackson and Butch Atkins. The family suggests memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 543 Ockley Dr., Shreveport, LA 71106. I have fought the good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. 2 Timothy 4:7
