SHREVEPORT, LA - Dr. Robert E. "Bob" Rushing died December 29, 2014. A memorial service will be held on Friday, January, 2, 2015, at 10:30 A.M., at Noel Memorial United Methodist Church, 520 Herndon Street, Shreveport, Louisiana. Visitation in the church parlor will follow the service.
Bob Rushing was born in Idabel, Oklahoma, on March 27, 1928. His family moved to Shreveport when he was twelve years old, and Bob graduated from Fair Park High School in 1945. He received his pre-med education at Centenary College, where he was a member of Kappa Alpha Order. He graduated from the Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans in 1951.
A veteran of the United States Coast Guard, Dr. Rushing served for two years (1952-54) in the United States Public Health Service in Alexandria, Louisiana. After returning to Shreveport, he began the general practice of medicine with the late Jack Birdwell, M.D., on Centenary Boulevard. Subsequently, George Risinger, M.D., joined them in a successful partnership, which later included Ann Risinger Landry, M.D., and Wayne Barksdale, M.D.
Dr. Rushing was a founding Fellow of the American Academy of Family Practice in 1977, and he helped establish the Family Medicine Department at the LSU Medical School in Shreveport. Since 1991, Bob was an active member of Noel Memorial United Methodist Church.
Dr. Rushing was happily married to Annis May "Skeeter" Johnson, his college sweetheart, for 38 years until he lost her to cancer in 1989. They had a cherished daughter, Annis Cornell Rushing Flournoy, who survives him with her husband, Thomas Cole Flournoy, and their son, Grady Cornell Flournoy. Dr. Rushing's sister, Sharon Rushing Fagan, and her husband, Col. Willis F. Fagan, also survive him. Bob found love a second time and married Mary Ann Hallquist, who also preceded him in death. Surviving them are her children, whom Bob embraced in a mutual affection: Rob Hallquist, Gary Hallquist, and Carol Rustowicz, their spouses, children, and grandchildren.
Dr. Rushing had a full life. He loved his family, and he was especially proud of his grandson Grady. He enjoyed his Thursdays on the lake, bass fishing with close friends. He truly appreciated his medical practice and connecting with several generations of patients.
Honorary pallbearers will be George L. Risinger, M.D., Wayne S. Barksdale, M.D., the staff of the former Rushing-Risinger Clinic, and the Noel Methodist Couples' Class.
The family suggests that, in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Noel Memorial United Methodist Church, 520 Herndon Street, Shreveport, LA 71101 or Centenary College of Louisiana, 2911 Centenary Boulevard, Shreveport, LA 71104.
