SHREVEPORT, LA - Just a few days shy of her 91st birthday, Ruby L. Olive Hunter went to be with her Lord and Savior on December 7, 2016 with her family at her side as one of her favorite hymns "It Is Well with My Soul" played gently in the background. Visitation with family and friends will be held from 5-7 p.m. Saturday, December 10 at Rose-Neath Funeral Home Southside. A memorial service will be held in the chapel at Rose-Neath Southside at 2 p.m. Sunday, December 11 followed by interment at Forest Park West Cemetery.
Ruby was born on December 12, 1925 in Mansfield, Louisiana and spent a majority of her life in Shreveport which is where Ruby married the love of her life, Lewis Allison Hunter on February 8, 1952. Three children were born to this blessed union: Sandra Lynn Carrier, Lewis A. Hunter II, and Jane Evelyn Hunter-Hanson. Ruby was first a homemaker where she lovingly raised her children. Once her three beloved children were older, she then began work outside the home at Western Electric until she retired.
Ruby and her husband Lewis were lifelong members of the Shreveport First Church of the Nazarene. Every Sunday, she could be seen singing her favorite hymns in the choir, as a soloist, or as a part of a group until she moved to live in Wichita, Kansas in 2002. Ruby returned to live at The Glen Retirement System in Shreveport in 2015 and attended church whenever she was able to.
In addition to being a loving wife and devoted mother, she was a doting grandmother to her 9 grandchildren: Jamie Wilhelm, Joe Carrier, Lewis Hunter III, Justin Hunter, David Hunter, Jennifer Hunter, Holly Del Valle, Misty Elfer, and Walter Adam S. Hanson.
Ruby will forever be remembered for her devotion to God, her love for her family, and her ability to whip up a delicious meal out of anything she could find. Ruby was preceded in death by her mother Doshia Ylantha Hart Olive; husband, Lewis Hunter; sisters Estelle Wallace and Hassie Lee Bevis; and brother Hamp Olive. Her unconditional legacy of love will be carried forward by her three children, 9 grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to The Pet Pantry of Northwest Louisiana or the Shreveport First Nazarene Church's Blanket Ministry.
