Funeral services for Sgt. David "Tree" Burks, 65, will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, April 14, 2018 at Rose-Neath Southside Chapel with his brother-in-law, George Mauldin officiating. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery, Greenwood, LA. Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. until service time at the funeral home.
Tree was born December 23, 1952 in Overton, TX to R.F. and Gertrude Burks and went to be with the Lord on April 10, 2018. He worked for the Louisiana Forestry Commission for six years. He began his career at the Caddo Parish Sheriff's Office and retired after 36 years. During his career, Tree was recognized in the Guinness Book of World Records as being the tallest law enforcement officer in the world. David was known for delivering donuts to many different people and for always having a joke to share. He was a family man, not only to his children but to many others.
Tree was preceded in death by parents and sister, Connie Burks Mattson. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Rebecca "Becky" Cole Burks; daughters, Emily Rebecca Burks, Rachel Burks Braswell and husband Mark, Sarah Burks Godfrey and husband Andrew, Lana Oakes Lopez and husband Jhair, and Tanner Oakes; first grandchild coming July 2018; sister, Nancy Burks Wilkin and husband Ken; special nephews, James, John David, and Matthew; special niece, Jessica Newby Murray; brother-in-law, John Mattson; and numerous other nieces and nephews.
Honoring Tree as pallbearers will be Mark Braswell, Andrew Godfrey, Matthew Newby, John David Newby, Mike Mangham, and Mark Mangham. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be members of the Caddo Parish Sheriff's Office and members of the Caddo Parish Sheriff's Office Reserve Deputies.
