Shirley was born in Monroe, Louisiana on June 10, 1947, but lived the majority of her life in Homer, then Shreveport, LA. After high school, she attended and graduated from Northwestern State University in Natchitoches. The love of her life was her husband, Bobby Potts. They were married for 34 years. While in Shreveport, she owned and operated a very successful medical billing business up until her retirement. Although she never had any children of her own, she always had her pets. Only one at a time so she could devote her love and attention to it. She did, however, have her “Greats” as she called them, referring to her nieces and nephews. She adored them and they adored her. Later in her life, she started riding motorcycles and was a member of a local Christian motorcycle club and enjoyed many trips with them. Shirley, being Shirley, had to, of course, ride her own motorcycle.
She is preceded in death by her father, Carlton Broughton; mother, Katherine Broughton Readhimer; and brother, Tommy Broughton. Left to cherish her memory includer her husband, Bobby Potts; brothers, Donny Broughton and wife, Susie of Rockwall, TX and Dennis Broughton and wife, Sarah of Keithville, LA; and of course, her “Greats”, all 20 nieces and nephews spanning two generations.
It is said that death is life’s greatest adventure, IF you believe in God, then this is true. Shirley believed in God, and she made this journey on October 10, 2024, at age 77. She is now in heaven with our Lord and Savior, happy and pain-free, only sad about the ones she left behind. All of us will cherish her memory and the joy she gave us by being a part of our lives. Shirley was a happy, giving, delightful, and most of all, a fun person to be around. She never passed up a chance to laugh and enjoy those around her, even though her physical body would not allow her to do so in her final days. She would, however, smile, frown, laugh, or cry, even though she could hardly talk. You still knew what she was thinking or trying to say. At the end of each day, she was a wife, sister, auntie, friend, and just Shirley. Those who knew her loved her. Those left behind still do love her and will continue to do so. Now she is embraced by the love of God and forever in our memories. We can only say “thank you” for allowing us to be a part of your life and you a part of ours.
Graveside services honoring the life of Shirley will be held at Northwest Louisiana Veterans Cemetery, 7970 Mike Clark Rd, Keithville, LA 71047 on Monday, October 28, 2024 at 11:30 a.m.
